I love a serendipitous thing - I was hoping to share my knowledge with a certain group of people, and those people just wrote to say they were hoping to learn stuff from someone like me. Hooray!

i just got my first "real" translator byline [in theory my name should be published along with my translations but in practice it almost never is. my client's book was finally published and got a nice local writeup.]

I posted that I was thinking of getting Anupy Singla's book in the comments on a friend's FB wall, and he ordered it for me as a surprise to tell me how much he values my friendship. This is someone I just adore with all my heart, so it was a really sweet gesture and I teared up over it.

Oftentimes, reading the best things about yours days become the best things about my day.

the best of the best: i found that i have a significant amount of money in my account. i don't necessarily relate my work to money, as my payments are usually very, very delayed (2 to 3 months, sometimes payments stretching out over 6 months for a large job), so sometimes money appears in my account and I can't even connect it to the gigantic job I did in April.

So, happy day! I can buy my plane tickets in cash, if I choose to do so (my credit card here has an absurdly low limit, so I might actually have to).

also, this is bad but good: I spent an hour on the phone with my best friend this morning. She has taken herself off the transplant list and is beginning her trip out of this world, albeit slowly [she has a bad liver due to hepatitis]. She has been the model for most of the things I've done in my adult life and I respect her so much. Her courage in the face of the situation is remarkable and inspiring. I am so lucky to be able to talk to her.

My line manager is super forking awesome. I ordered some stuff to be delivered that I thought was due by today but now I find out it'll be here on Monday and can I make sure someone will be in to accept it? Now, I had today off as annual leave, but I just phoned my line manager and he was really casual about me taking as much time as I need off on Monday too, even though I'm supposed to give a weeks notice. Yay!

I'm also relieved I at least get the things on Monday because I need them for some classes I'm teaching on Tuesday and Wednesday (at least, I can do without them in a pinch but I really want them!).

Yesterday I went for a walk! I walked about 3 miles in all! This may not seem like such a big deal except that a year ago I was in a leg brace because of my forked up foot/ankle and couldn't walk any miles at all! So being able to just be like, "hey, it's gorgeous out and I'm in the city and I want an udon noodle salad from HipCityVeg right now" and then actually walk there and eat my salad and then walk around some more and then come home and still be able to walk some more and not be in agonizing pain is pretty forking amazing. I was tired afterwards, because I'm completely out of shape after spending over a year off my feet...but good-tired, which is something I'm not used to at all.

I got my 2012/2013 b-day gift from my sister today! We don't hold to specific dates for b-day presents... or years either, I guess. It's late from last year and early for this year (2 years since it is larger than what we usually do).

This is the swag! She noted that it is for my upcoming travel and "homelessness" (a running joke since I'm always on the go and often tell my mom I'm going to sell everything and not have a permanent home, instead I sometimes store everything and don't have a permanent home).

Image
Supplies: emergency tent, 2 emergency sleeping bags, water filter straw, titanium spork, sewing kit, all weather matches, pop up light bulb (I should have angled this the other way, it's bottom left and super cute), collapsable cup, write in the rain pen and notebook and another small notebook! Plus a cute salamander card.

Woah, nice haul, Pi!! I love stocking up on all the emergency kit stuff.

Thanks for kind words, guys! I guess my thesis stuff is my "best thing" from a few days ago but everything is happening at the same time. So weird. My coworker says I've got to get my advisor's words in writing. He's not a very nice guy so that might end up in the worst things thread ;)

SD, I've been reading about how bummed you've been in CO. Glad you are able to get back home and pick up where you left off!!

I'm really glad about everyone's best things. This thread makes me happy.

My sister gave me a homemade thank you card for being the best sister. I almost cried. She has a 10 week old baby and I have been doing my best to help her and support her. It was so sweet.

:D Eurovision!!! I got into it a few years ago but every year I end up forgetting about it until the finals are on since it's (obviously? sadly?) not advertised here! Excuse me while I get myself up to date (thank god for YouTube).
