Had so much fun at GED tonight. One guy passed his practice test so he can register for the full deal (finally!!) and two more wrote reasonable essays. I think we might squeak through the December deadline when the test changes over and they void all incomplete scores (money grubbing mustards).

But, the best was using my new iPad. I used a whiteboard app to do examples and show students stuff instead of lugging around marker and my whiteboard tile and eraser and used some math apps with them (one on one-- everybody is at their own pace, so I just make rounds and work with them as needed). And, I used Scanner Pro to copy the test scores and essays to send to the office for validation. Also used a math facts quiz app to help me do my random shout outs (every so often I fire out a question at everybody to get them doing some mental math).

I'm so excited about all the ways i can use this to help enrich the class. If I were rich, I'd buy a set if 5-6 minis to use.

Another great thing is that we found some of the apps for Droid, so a few students would put on their phones.

Oh, haha. It wasn't just fun for me though that's what I made it sound like! It just overall worked so well and added a lot to our class workflow. I was able to scan or save the notes/scratch work and email to the students. (Most of the ones there tonight have some kind of smart phone)

I got a fabulous haircut by the nicest lady. I've never had a good hairdresser I really wanted to go back to, but now I've found one, and that is super exciting!

I don't have a casserole dish anymore, so I made enchilladas in a cast iron skillet. Dudes. I now never have to buy a baking dish again. It was so good. Ughhhhhh. I'm seriously going to try baking everything in cast iron.

My dad was just telling me that his friend bakes apple pies in his cast-iron skillet. Mmmm....pie....

I don't know if I've ever mentioned this, but I wish so much I'd had someone like you when I was studying for the GED. It had been 12 years since I'd done any sort of schooling (and what I had done was 100% self-taught due to being homeschooled by a depressed mother, but that's another story for another thread). Anyway, I took a class, but my instructors were less than interested in actually helping the students, and pretty much just left us to work through the materials provided and answer questions if they had to (*sigh*). So I think you're amazing for working so hard to actually help people, and I just want to say thank you on their behalf for all you do.

giggling with one of my housemates, and realizing that for both of us, this is probably the most cozy house we've lived in. (3 floors = 4 people, all of whom bake and are variably vegan.) (i am always vegan; the others are the variables.)

Went Christmas decoration shopping with my mom. Don't worry, not putting anything up until after Thanksgiving! But I found this amazing thrift store coffee cup. Look how freaked out that cat is!

My aunt trekked out to the vegan/gf bakery and came back with SIX cupcakes and a brownie for my birthday. And I got birthday money which let me buy a new DSLR! Good birthday!

happy birthday jdubs! that sounds like a great bday.

best and worst thing: made cake balls for the first time using leftover cake crumbs from my halloween hamburger cupcakes and leftover tub of frosting. those are freaking good and pretty damn easy. i wish i never knew about them.

i had to go to the kid's conference and on the way back, stopped in the supermarket where i met my old high school english teacher. i would never have considered writing if not for her, and it was so awesome to see her and introduce her to my own kid. she was such an amazing teacher.

I'm drinking a huge glass of wine because my bod is totally killing me and the pain relievers I took didn't help. Cheers!

I registered as self-employed (again) and invoiced for my first piece of work in my new business! It's just a part-time thing, but it's something I'm really excited about.

Biker boy's friends won a curling party and invited us. I have been threatening to learn to curl for years! If anything it's a chance to try something none of us has ever done, and drink some beer.

Walked in the park for an hour. (Awesome to feel somewhat strong again, this being the 17th day of The Flu That Will Not Die.)
