SO, about four hours ago, the CO detector in my apartment started chirping. Not an alarm sound-a chirp every minute or so--this sound usually means the battery needs to be changed, so I took the battery out and proceeded about my business. I was in the apartment the whole time...I just bought a battery, plugged the detector back into the wall and, lo and behold, it's chirping again. But, even though I can't smell or see CO, if it really were in the apartment, I would have been sick/dead already, right?
I'm pretty sure I just need to buy a new CO detector...but, like everyone and their mother on the PPK, I worry.
Hold me.

CO detectors need to be replaced every few years.

Not dead, Meggs.
Mumbles--I'm pretty sure the mustard is more than a few years old...it came with the apartment, and I doubt my landlord has changed it for a while.
Also, the windows are open.

CO has no smell (and no color, no taste and is not irritant), that's one of the reasons why it's so dangerous - because it's hard to detect. Opening the window was a good idea.
If you don't feel any different (dizzy, headache), and if your heating installations are in good condition, it's probably the detector. I'd get it replaced and try not to freak out.

I'd freak out and get a new detector. And then diagnose myself with CO poisoning for the next ten years any time I felt weird.
Well, we had a CO problem in our house growing up and that's what we did and we're pretty okayish now.

Oh, man, I thought CO pretty much killed you within an hour or two...now, I have to worry about slow damage?
Meggs, not all of the Chicago Fire department is hot, unfortunately.
Aelle: no dizziness.
If I'm not on the boards tomorrow (since I live here), y'all know what happened. Or, I'll be typing as a zombie, which could be pretty cool.

Continuous low-level co exposure is dangerous. Please get this checked out immediately.

Seeing that it's been more than 20 minutes and you still appear to be alive, I consider this thread to be an awesome success. Woohoo!

I think that they will have her call the fire department and they will come out with sirens and everything. I heard that is what they made someone out here do- call the Fire Department and report it, even though she just had a question about it possibly not working properly. Way to waste money!

Ooops...sorry for leaving all of you in suspense. I looked at the back of the CO detector, and it has "December 2006" stamped on it.
I have to call my landlord anyway (yes, I'm too cheap to buy a new one, myself).
