I am not in grad school but am thinking about it and I was wondering if anyone has or is getting a masters in public administration? I will admit to not reading the 40 pages of this thread looking for it. Is it a stupid degree? It probably is, huh?

Yesterday's presentation was pretty awesome -- especially considering I had a fever. I got so many compliments afterwards! Rah.

Just chiming in after months away from the boards to say that I defended my PhD a few months ago and it went awesome and I didn't have a panic attack and die. So it can be done (and leaving the boards may have only had a little bit to do with it)!

strawberryrock, I know several MPAs. If you want to work in government or for a non-profit it can be a great degree.

Congrats, Thessaly!

My general qualifying exam is Tuesday. On top of that, I guess there was an error in my taxes so now I need to gather receipts and mail them to tax folks which isn't that hard but is a really annoying distraction. Also yesterday I drank too much coffee. Today I am really tired and got no sleep last night and was experiencing cold symptoms so I popped a cold pill with drowsiness side effects and now I can't get enough coffee. I am going to explode.

That's wonderful news - congratulations, Dr Thessaly!

fork fork fork it's tomorrow morning. I've been hella nervous all day. My fight or flight response has been on overdrive and hasn't stopped. I think I might die. Or barf on my examiners. Or punch a tree so hard it explodes.

But I'm betting you'll pass your exam instead! Sending good thoughts and waiting for your triumphant update!

Well I'm still alive! There's 6 of us doing it. Three of us did it yesterday (I got to be first) and three more tomorrow. Results will be release after everyone has gone.

Congratulations for surviving!
How do you feel about it? (Relieved and exhausted, I'm sure, but what else?!)

Soooo I have to graduate this summer, otherwise credits start expiring and I have to take a class. So, they just redid the calendar on the school's website and I had been reading it wrong (rather they never put a "thesis defended and turned in by ______ day" and I assumed it was something else). Anyway, apparently its in a WEEK. I am not going to be ready in a week. Sure, maybe if I didn't have to work. But I have to work.

fork me! I wish I hadn't been too depressed to do school stuff for like two months after my breakup/day of my seminar presentation. I really think what I'm gonna put out after all these years is gonna be crepe. Or I just won't make it, and I will be so screwed. A Fall graduation means I lose credits and have to take a class, and also, I could lose my job because of sequester cuts since fall graduation is in the next fiscal year.

Wish me luck :-/

Congrats, Thessaly and Tea!

Lycophyte, that sounds really stressful and I hope everything works out. Good luck. <3

lycophyte, can you talk to the people at work? If it's just a week I feel like they might be flexible about giving you the time you need to get everything handed in for school. Don't give up yet!

My boss got me an extra day off that I didn't ask for soon enough, so she was pretty annoyed. What I got off is what I got. So, I get an extra day or day and a half off. And my boss just started turning it back on me saying "I don't think you've been trying very hard on this."
Thanks, I already wasn't stressed and depressed enough about the whole thing. Oh well, don't care mean lady.

Has anyone got any experiences or know anyone who started a PhD full-time and switched to part-time?

Well, I'm definitely not pregnant! I've heard of people doing it because of illness and so on, but my case is quite complicated as it's to do with another member of my family and we're not sure what's happening with that in the future.

I know someone who did it because their husband was in the military and got deployed (they also had a small child), and another who's had to take several medical leaves because she's being treated for cancer. I'd say your first move is to talk to your DGS, apprise them of what's going on, and see what insight/information they can offer.

Sooooo, our group project is due on Wednesday and at the moment all of the figures/equations in the google doc have disappeared and the person with the word doc is asleep (I'm in charge of writing up the study weaknesses and it's gonna be HILARIOUS!). Also, we keep finding amazing errors.

On the plus side, I've fed people so many vegan snacks during this project and distributed recipes today. So, I might fail school but cake.

Woke up to an email from my supervisor, saying he re-organized our spreadsheet and re-did our stats, and huzzah! Piles of significant p-values all over the place.

He just sent the SPSS output for 4 of the tests. Stuff is even cooler than his email had suggested! Hot damn.
