Oh no C&S! Lots of luck!

I got an email that the decisions for the grad program I applied to have been delayed but we should hear within a week or so.

I got an article accepted by a journal! This was exactly what I needed today (gloomy, cold, sleety, with several neglected obligations reproaching me and a pile of freshman research papers coming in). Now I'm going to have a gin and tonic and veganize my friend's mémère's tourtière!

Congrats Desdemona!

My class situation for next semester is still up in the air. I'm calmer about it now though. Worst case scenario is that I can't get into any classes. Then I take next semester off and work. I was all stressed out about my transfer credit expiring (there's a 7 year limit, and the two classes I transferred are from winter semester 7 years ago) and then realized I'll have time to refile for candidacy anyway if I have to take a semester off so I can just change which classes I'm transferring (I have some from 6 years ago too) then.

Still hoping that's not what's going to happen and that I'll get into classes (my advisor thinks there's a good chance, and also thinks a few more sections might open up-- so I am stalking the registrar's site like crazy) but it is what it is.

Dept. Christmas Party coming up. Vegan Prof and I just teamed up (he'll make a savory snack; I'll make a sweet one) and we promised to set some of it aside so that we can each enjoy each other's since there will be no other vegan food at the event AND non-vegans always eat the vegan stuff first. Sigh.

C&S, that scheduling situation sucks. I would be so stressed out if it were me! I'm glad you're already exploring other options in case shiitake hits the fan and your intended last semester doesn't quite work out.

Congrats vijita, Desdemona, and boober! Fingers crossed Linanil!

C&S I hope you can get into those classes. That really sucks. Will you be able to get a job lined up if you take the semester off? Fingers crossed for you.

Lutin, good luck snagging some vegan food at your party! I've stopped going to my depts parties for that reason, among others.

...Someone help me remember NOT to go to the dept. Christmas party next year. I felt super isolated / like the black sheep because everyone wanted to speak in Dutch (which I don't speak) and it felt like pulling teeth to get any kind of interaction. Totally killed the euphoria of submitting a revised paper in record time.

Today all 3 advisors and I had a skype meeting. These always go terribly, I think because most of them have been spent discussing (re)annotations from hell, so I anticipate a lot of doom. There was no doom at all today, but because of family drama, I've been paralyzed about making decisions, so even though all 3 of them were discussing pro's and con's with me (all of which I'd already considered, btw), there was no progress. Further agreement to submit by Christmas next year. But no progress.

Looks like I'm going to Chile for a few days in March to go observing! Should be interesting. Holy crepe is it ever going to be a long flight though.

I got a spot in one of the two classes I need to graduate from the waitlist (making me glad I got onto it even though my advisor told me very sternly, if you're #6 on the waitlist, I wouldn't hold your breath for a spot). And, my advisor said a section for a class of his should show up on the registrar's site soon, and I can use that class (which I'd rather take anyway) to replace the other one I needed to take.

So it looks like MAYBE I am going to pull this shiitake off after all. Yaaaaaay.

Yay Cold and Sleepy! That is excellent news.

My news is a) I don't like my program and b) I was accepted to present at a conference! Hold me!

Hey me, too! I'm about to start the final semester of my MA and overall I've been really disappointed in the content and the teaching. My advisor has also just been changed for the third time, to a guy who isn't even in the same school as me, which is rounding the whole experience off very nicely. Ugh.

Do you have an advisor you can talk to to voice your concerns? You might be able to change some things up in the program to make it better suited to your aims/ interests.

Congrats on the conference j-dub!

I switched departments last year, and while my new one isn't perfect by any stretch, I'm muuuuch happier with it. For me it was worth the hassle of figuring out new graduation requirements, filling out a mountain of paper work, and all that other stuff.

Mine is a condensed 1-year program, so switching probably isn't possible. And I might lose funding, which would make it not doable. I'm just disappointed because I was so excited for what seemed like the perfect program. Turns out it's the perfect program because I had already learned/taught myself 90% of it...at least it's over in September. And I'll have letters after my name to show for it, I guess.

And thankfully my thesis work is all about my interest and my supervisor is amazing (and, perhaps not coincidentally, from a different department) so I can do work that interests me.

I'm giving an hour-long paper on my research this evening and I feel so underprepared. An hour! Every academic paper I've given so far has been 20-30 minutes total. Plus my supervisor will be there. Argh!

When my advisor said he was no longer supporting me financially, he made it sound like it was only my stipend. I found out last week that also includes tuition. So, I owe the University $6000, which we don't have. Because I haven't paid my fall tuition I can't apply for a student loan. Balls.

I can't wait to get out of here!!!! Only a few more months...

Speaking of which, a Slate article on the inherent suckiness (and debt!) of The Academy: http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/201 ... _debt.html

(Quickly scanning the public google doc they link to, I am super thrilled that I was hired to do a PhD in the Netherlands, where I count as research staff and reap all sorts of public benefits. I wish other places had the same idea! And also, that everyone was thinking about how to train us for life outside the academy!)

My code! My code is working (to the minimum required specifications for "working", still a lot of debugging to do).

OMG OMG. It's official. I just signed my new contract. I'll be between jobs from April to September, but in October I'll return as a Research & Teaching Associate. Which means that my PhD thesis is finally funded. And on top of that I found the best co-supervisor I can ever hope to get in my field. Yay.

Now I feel like sleeping for a week (but that's not in the cards for me).

I've found a supervisory committee and settled on a topic for my thesis. But oh god are dates coming up fast (15 page proposal is due Feb 15, along with papers for almost all of my classes). And this semester is looking a lot better than last semester in terms of me actually learning things. One of my profs though...consistently uses the most problematic examples in class, presumably simply to be inflammatory. And he seems to think his job is to help people create an ethical framework. Pretty sure I did that many years ago and I don't need to strengthen it by muddling through problematic examples with my (at times shockingly unthoughtful) classmates. God I hate that class.

My advisor told me via email today that while he has faith in me and my project, my ability to graduate hinges entirely on having a concrete result, and like, pretty soon. (He said it in a nice way, and prefaced it with something like "I don't want to add more pressure, but...") It's nothing I didn't already know, and I really appreciate that he told me as much directly, but it caused an instant flare up of terrible anxiety and oh fork oh fork oh fork oh fork itis.

I feel like I am so close to a solution, but I have felt like I was so close to a solution for so long now.

Sigh. Bad day on the rollercoaster.
