yay lyco and cour!

I am living for the summer right now and totally can't begin to process how much work I need to get done, I have like 60 pages to write, a sculpture to finish for the first-year show, packets to make for my panel reviews, several books to read, and work 30hrs a week every week for the next 3 weeks, but by the 1st of march i'm pretty much done.

hoping I don't crash and burn!

Not quite sure this is appropriate (it's also mostly copied from the jobs thread) but......

My PhD is ending in about a year. The university doesn't really have a job finding network in anything related to my field (CogSci, linguistics, nonverbal communication with a bit of neuroscience and no fancy computational skills) and I don't know where or how to look since I'd been setting myself up for academic research/academia, and might not want that anymore. My skill set also doesn't quite match the few jobs I've found (no fancy tech skills or translation skills). The Academy is notoriously bad at liaising with the real world, so I don't even know how to start.

Have any of you done this? What helped?

Ugh. I've been seriously wanting to quit my program lately and after this semester I only (only) have to finish my thesis and take a three credit independent study. I hate all of my classes this semester. HATE them. Usually I can find something redeemable in a course but I am at a loss. I just spent two weeks procrastinating on a stupid paper I could not begin to write. Why is this final push such a struggle?

3 of 4 conference papers accepted so far!! And those are all really great conferences. I'd better get down to writing.

I love when it gets closer to the conference and you look at your proposal and think, "That sounds like a great paper; someone should totally write it. Oh...right. crepe."

I'm off to RSA this weekend. My session was actually cancelled, which I was initially bummed about, but now I'm kind of happy to just go, attend other people's papers, and hang out with my Renaissance peeps. Plus the same proposal got accepted to a UK conference this summer, so I'll still get to give (oh, yeah, and actually write) the paper.

Hahahaha. Yeah, totally.
I'm lucky. I'm working on two big projects (one of which is my PhD thesis) for which I've already collected a LOT of material & transcribed stuff etc. So I can basically use the search function to find all the relevant quotes and then write my conference paper around those. It seems a bit Michael Moore, but it works!

Yay, lycophyte! Boober, that's intense! If you can, try to make time for some fun stuff too. It will help keep you grounded!

Lutin, I would search linked in and see what careers people with your background have entered. Since I am changing fields a bit, this is what I did to figure out where to apply. I already had an idea of what I wanted to do though. My husband , who went from astronomy to tech, knew where to apply because of a few people before him who paved the way. They helped him figure out what extra skill sets he needed to develop as well.

*YAWN* Up since at least 5 am, reading theory on the SF New Wave of the 1960s. There are worse things I could be doing, but I'll have to teach my brain how to shut itself off and just SLEEP.

No, you are going to kill that defense with a stick and then come tell us all about it!

Sooooooooo my thesis writeup is due to my advisor in 2 weeks. This is a soft deadline-- after this he has about two weeks to review it, then my committee members have two weeks to review it, then I defend (holy forking shiitake, if I do say so myself).

Did I mention I changed my topic like, yesterday? Well sorta. Basically, I came up with this mechanism for doing one thing-- but the results aren't great. But the same mechanism (with some minor tweaks) can be used to do something totally different, pretty well. So I'm shifting to doing the second thing. Unfortunately this requires that I rewrite a huge portion of my existing report. Well, or write more of it... my advisor told me that I am not to take anything out and that the other work counts too even if the results are predicated on some outlandish things. (Have I mentioned that my advisor is great? I have a great advisor.)

Anyway, pretty much the final countdown here. I am alternating between totally forking freaking out and having these moments of total grad student zen.

Yay to all! I just took my MAT today. My prelim score was 414, which is average. My grad school says they'll accept above 400, so hopefully it's good enough.
