Almost done with a draft of my upcoming solo conference presentation. (It's not cheating to copy and paste slides from an earlier version of the same talk, right? ....Right.)

Relatedly, turning a 25-minute long talk into a 15-minute long one is hard!

Um, YEAH. I'm reading a paper I gave in London last summer at a conference in NJ later this month, slides and all. Reuse, recycle, repurpose!

I've just had a paper accepted for next year's RSA (Renaissance Society of America) conference that will need a serious haircut to go from its current 20+ page seminar length to 10 page/20 minute conference talk. Fortunately, it's multiple months away so lalalalala.

I'm sorry, Desdemona, what was that? I can't hear you over all the fat syrup-covered vegan babies falling from the sky.

So I did the math out today and the good news is, I really only need to take 3 more semesters of classes. (I've already taken 2 of a projected 4, but am switching departments and am only allowed to transfer 2/3rds of a semester worth.) I thought I might have to do FOUR more, but the new department actually requires fewer credits overall so yeah.

The annoying thing is, I agreed to start my thesis in fall. Which means I need a committee by the end of fall semester. My advisor told me the way to do this is to take classes with other professors and convince them you are a super good student. Okay fine. But I also have to take another class this semester that's a co requisite for starting project work, and that + a semester of project work uses 2/3 of my classes, leaving me 1 to entice a committee member with-- but I need TWO committee members. I literally know no one in the department but my advisor so where am I getting the third guy from?

Also my advisor is teaching a class I super want to take and if I'm fishing for committee members and starting my project, I don't have space for that! Wah.

Maybe I shouldn't be starting my thesis yet? Maybe I should email my advisor and ask him what to do?

Ok so I did email my advisor because after posting, I realized that was the sane thing to do.

Along with giving me some welcome class selection advice, he also gave me the thumbs up on my general project idea. So I am happy about that!

Assisted with a 4-hr pelvic fracture repair on the sweetest Beagle mix in the world this morning and I'm still terribly exhausted. This weekend is going to be a very long one.

Advisor shiitake almost hit the fan again: First supervisor (the crazy one with whom I have had 0 professional contact for 2 years) is trying to insist that PhD#1 and I include her as co-author, co-promotor (like co-chair of the diss. committee) and co-write a book with her. She won the grant I work on, but considering that we have zero professional contact on purpose ..... that sounds terrible. For many reasons. Our current supervisor wrote today to say I should contact the dept. head or dean about the situation since he spoke up for us, but our own words would be better. I quickly wrote PhD#1's promotor for advice, and she wrote twice saying not to worry, she chased down the dean and dept. head and shiitake's settled. THANK GOD.

Lutin, that's a relief! Glad things seem to have worked out with that supervisor.

I found out that my advisor is going on vacation from next week till SEPTEMBER. Which is really crappy. I'm working on a paper and I was planning to talk to him weekly about my research, since I'm trying to wrap things up and my research is being difficult again. It's not easy to talk over email because we have to draw chemical structures and reactions, and even though we have programs to draw structures, discussion usually involves lots of chalkboard writing. Also, our dept requires students to write and defend to our committee two original research proposals and I was planning to do one in the summer and one in the fall. This means I will have to do both in the fall at the same time that I'm trying to finish research, write my thesis, and defend. There's another girl in our lab who is defending in Sept and she was going to schedule her first RP defense in July and our advisor was like, nope, I won't be here. She had to schedule it for next week, and she isn't prepared to go that early, but that's her only option. This is all stuff that can be worked around, but what really irks me is that it's just another example that our advisor doesn't give a shiitake about the students. He knows three students are planning to finish in the fall and we really need him to be here, and he didn't even bother to tell us he was leaving. I think that's the worst part. He was just going to split with no notice. It feels like such a betrayal. We only found out because of the one girl trying to schedule her RP defense. I get bitched out for taking two days off to move (seriously, he left a note on my desk, emailed me, and hassled the secretary to find out where I was) but he can take 3 months off. I have never felt supported in this group and I'm going to leave feeling the same way.

His administrative assistant said she thinks he scheduled it deliberately, to avoid having to have discussions with us about what we needed to finish up to graduate in fall. He just wants to leave us in limbo doing research and then when he gets back can say, oh you didn't do what I expected, you have to stay another 6 months. Gah!

Congrats, lutin!

I talked to a school counselor today and she suggested I talk to the ombudsman. He's doing a lot of stuff that goes against university policy. At least I'm mad (and not sad) about it. It feels empowering!

Since I've hardly posted in this thread...has anyone been on Phinished? My ex suggested it to me. Been going there a little bit.

Anyway, its time to get my head out of my asparagus. I was hoping to toss the ball down the hall and finish up in the fall, but I was told that's a no, must finish this summer. Which means, I should turn in a draft in a few weeks GUH. (MUST for a few reasons, credits from first semester will expire if I don't, and the possibility of my school/grad dependent job disappearing due to sequester cuts)

I have been useless the last few weeks. The only thesis example I have is my ex's and she was such an encourager and supportive and I've now been depressed and focusing on this has been toooo hard.

But no luck.

I have a really important conference paper in two days and I'm so unprepared! I've had so much stress and life issues I haven't had time to keep up with work, and this is a really amazing opportunity for me.

My conference friends and I all woke up with fevers and sore throats today. And are all giving talks today. (Some of us, twice!) Blarsjkg vsjfnjfks.

I'm supposed to connect with potential supervisors before school starts. Of the four, one is on sabbatical as of July 1, one is retired, and one is on sabbatical until the end of July. So...here's hoping the one that responded likes me?

And I found out that I can do the degree in one full year (Sept-August) which...is fine. But not what I thought was going on because I evidently did not read closely.

I'm giving a conference paper on Thursday and the idea seems rather surreal. After passing my exam and submitting my spring grades, I decided to give myself some much-needed breathing room before (starting to think about) thinking about my dissertation prospectus. The mental break has been super nice but I'm feeling a bit disconnected from "scholarliness," with the result that thinking about being at a conference seems a bit like putting on some sort of drag...in a good way. Does that makes sense?

Of course, I'm also using the trip as a mini-vacation, including a meet-up with Tofulish and some other NJ/NYC-area PPKers, the Alan Cumming one-man Macbeth (http://www.macbethonbroadway.com), a visit to the Cloisters after a long hiatus, and eating a million things with various friends. So all in all, It's A Good Thing.

I am so jealous! I adore Alan Cumming and have heard only wonderful things about his Macbeth.
