In a nutshell

- Internet rants and venting anger doesn't help, in fact it makes people angrier

- Both increase the likliehood of self destructive behaviors like saying the wrong thing to people important to your life, hitting others, breaking things, etc.

- People who frequent ranting sites give themselves an anger problem beyond the issues they claim to be angry about

- Writing out your feeling with the intent of understanding your anger and what would stop it helps reduce anger.

There was another study awhile back that basically said people who always express their anger just get angrier, people who judiciously repress get less angry.

A teacher I had said that if you are aware that you are angry you are not "repressing" it. You are just choosing how you express it.

I read an article a few decades ago that said the dominant model of the mind at any time in history followed the dominant technology. Socrates - mills, Freud - steam engines, 2014, Cognitive therapy - computers.

What I found interesting about the current article was that they acknowledged the Freudian/Victorian bias in the current pop concept of "needing to let it out", like it was steam building up pressure in a chamber.

Instead the authors seem to be implying that if you reprogram the thoughts ( computers - cognitive therapy ) by trying to understand why you are angry, the anger button gets unpushed.
