I learned about Oregon history in elementary school social studies but not beyond that.

My colleague who teaches world history does geography, and I did some mini-geography lessons last year (after a student said Chicago is in Texas which is on the east coast...), but it doesn't seem to be a formally required item.

I know what happened to me in high school was that we just took too long on all the units leading up to the Cold War--we stopped right before WWII because the school year ran out. I'm pretty disappointed, because I feel like 1900s-present US history is more relevant than pre-independence to 1900. Not that those times AREN'T important, but that the curriculum should've been arranged to give us enough time.

Aaaaaaaaand the class that is testing in my room today just broke another desk. I already have one student sitting on the floor because we don't have enough desks, now it looks like we're up to two. I am so fatigued.

I remember having a lot of stuff about TN history and such when I was in elementary. I moved to TX in 5th grade, and we definitely had a lot of TX history. I'm pretty sure I had TX history in 2 different grades. I always thought it was a bit off to have the same amount of time devoted to one state that was devoted to both the entire country and the entire world.

ETA - I took geography in either 10th or 11th grade, but it was an elective. And it was taught by someone who was completely unqualified to teach it (she also taught French), so it wasn't great.

I just found out that I got the teaching job I interviewed for today! And it has perks I didn't even expect! I'm a mixture of relieved, excited and nervous about this, especially since I'll have a week between finishing my teacher training course and starting this job (and in that week I also need to move out of my shared house). Eek!

Yeah, I'm preeeeetttty sure we could have spent less time on the French & Indian War or the Teapot Dome Scandal so that we could fit in some things that really shaped the world we were inheriting, like Vietnam, the hippie counterculture movement, the Cold War, etc...

Agh, that sounds frustrating! This is one of the reasons I am wary of other classes using the room I usually teach in. Is there any way for you to have a word with the teacher that was in charge of that class?

In 5th grade we had to do state reports and I chose Florida. In 4th grade, we did CA history, and had awesome field trips to gold mines and nature-y places where Native Americans used to live. (Bummer that those sites are "overseen" by the government, but it was awesome to do all the hands on activities the rangers had planned.)

This Geography chat is so interesting! I loved Geography at school, but we didn't learn about... countries and stuff? I took the classes to the highest level one could in highschool here (it would probably be a bit pointless to explain the grades etc that we did here... much like I don't understand chat like 'Grade X' or 'Year Y' when people speak about American or English schooling or whathaveyou) We learned about London Docklands and wave patterns and clouds and malaria and tapeworms and stuff like that. Nothing about Scotland, I don't think!

We should make a geography thread where we all study a place or country for a week, and post links and things, and then move in to a new topic.

I'd reading a book on North Korea right now and realize I had no idea how Korea was divided. I had always thought it happened after the war, but really it all just reminds me so much of Ireland and Palestine.

Yes!! I was looking at the world map I have in my cubicle earlier, and Wrangel Island picked my curiousity. Wikipedia told me it belongs to Russia and I learned about Ada Blackjack, who found herself in the classic vegan predicament of being stranded on a deserted island. She only had her cat with her. They call her the female Robinson Crusoe, only she was way tougher (and real) being stranded on an island with a "severe polar climate" instead of a cushy tropical island.

I need to learn more about her for sure, because I need to know if she was able to rescue her cat when they came to pick her up.

It's not her fault. My school just buys the cheapest desks out there--they generally break after a few months of normal use no matter what. There are several in my classroom that are JUST BARELY still holding together, and so one of them broke. It was bound to happen sooner or later, but I'm still pissed off because we didn't have enough desks at the beginning of the year, and as the cheap, shitty desks keep breaking, we have even fewer, and it's the students who are suffering. It's so aggravating. How can we be expected to be super duper effective when students are sitting on the floor? What message does that send the kids? BLARGH.

That said... Congrats about getting the job!!

I came here to post something and got so distracted by this interesting geography discussion. So neat.

(Also, 'bang?!, I love that you always think I'm from Australia. I may do a really awesome accent after you tell me that occasionally...it is super accurate, too)

Yeah, Texas does two years of state history. Fourth grade, when you mostly learn myths and symbols, and seventh grade when you actually learn about events and presidents and so on.

My US History class was supposed to get to the present day, but something happened to the teacher, and the last semester we mostly watched documentaries. We got to the beginning of World War I, but never finished. I have such a lack of closure on that.

I had a pretty great geography class, mostly due to an awesome teacher. He was pretty nontraditional (by Texas public school standards). For our final exam, he gave us a blank sheet of paper and we had to draw the world and label as much of it as possible. It was both the hardest and best final exam of my life. The textbook was pretty bad, though. "Where does the water cycle start and what are its stages?" Bless my teacher who accepted "there's no start to a circle" for an answer.

My boyfriend is from Texas and went to UT and I still can't get over what Texas schools are like.

He was REQUIRED to take two semesters of Texas history in college in addition to the years in school. Plus, had he wanted a teaching credential, he'd have to take a third semester! Everything is bigger in Texas, including the history, apparently.

(I am super excited to go to Austin with him soon, but I still like to make fun of Texas because it is crazy in some ways. Also, his mom keeps buying him Texas paraphernalia so there are longhorns and lone stars EVERYWHERE in the closets and cupboards of his apartment. Because Texas.)

My husband moved from LA to Canada in high school and had no idea about anything outside California/US presidents. He found Social Studies really challenging, despite being a strong student in other classes.

I just remembered that I was a huge geography nerd. My parents bought me GeoSafari in 1987 when it released (and when I was too young to use it) and I LOVED that shiitake. I'd memorized all the countries in the world before I was 10. When Nunavut became a territory in Canada, I had a ridiculous moment of panic when I found out that my much-loved, died-in-a-flood, years and years old GeoSafari map would have to be updated.

Where did that knowledge go?

I ask my students where the water cycle starts. They are supposed to know it starts anywhere! We don't look at it as a circle really though; it's much more complex than that and we show all the geologic processes.

I'm giving them a pop quiz on it tomorrow. Hopefully they do well so I don't have to reteach before we do groundwater.

Not here in NY. The local community college has state history classes but the high schools don't.
