I don't think I'm the average person so I know my methods don't apply to a lot of people.

I make a monthly contribution to a mutual fund as well as give into a 401k directly from my paycheck. If your job offers a matching 401k contribution, you should really do it as it is basically free money. I was massively squirreling money away up to a few months ago when we did some home renovations. Now I'm back to my normal method of just transferring extra money into savings. I really like having a large cushion in my checking account so my checking account generally holds more money than I should keep there. Even when I was a broke college student, I always kept a cushion of at least $1000 in my checking so that I wouldn't have to balance a checkbook (things we did before online banking...). If my checking account fell below that, I'd tell myself no more spending for the month and stick to it.

I really do sometimes envy my college self for making less than $10k/year and having to pay all my living expenses including pricey college books on that(my tuition was covered under a grant so luckily I didn't have to pay it). I didn't have a car or pets at the time and I lived in a tiny place so that minimized my expenses greatly.

I used Mint initially to help tighten down some spending areas but since most of our expenses go onto a single credit card, I usually gauge my spending habits by the balance at the end of the month. If it is more than expected, I scrutinize the expenses more than usual but I just usually glance at it to make sure nothing crazy is happening.

Oh, money. I don't know what it's like to not live paycheque to paycheque. When I was working, I was the one making more money, and even then we were struggling. Those 4 years were the first time in my life that I wasn't legitimately in poverty, but still, not making enough money to stash away. This trip we just got home from will put us (more) in the hole, but I don't care because we both really needed something to look forward to after this shit-tastic year.

I have yet to know what it's like to be able to travel all the time (seriously, how do people afford to do that?) or other things like that. That'd be nice someday.

I'm having such a challenging time at work. My position is being eliminated as non-essential and my manager has the option of my notice period being working notice or, if there's not enough work for me to do, non-working notice for which I would still be paid. Guess which one I got? Oh yeah, I have be here because there is so much forking work for me to do that I can't see straight. It's really hard to wrap my head around how essential it is that I work my asparagus off for the next 5 weeks at a job that supposedly completely unnecessary. I am having a really hard time staying motivated and I hate how hard it is to get anything done. And I'm mad and sad and it sucks.

Why would you continue to put in 100% at an employer who is eliminating your job as non-essential?

mtoes, I was in this exact situation earlier this year. Once word got out that my contract was not being renewed (because it was deemed not necessary) I had to work 5 weeks after that because I was so busy. And even on my last day, I still had a ton of work on my desk, and my coworkers were all like, "what are we gonna do?" and I said, "not my problem anymore." as I got shown the door and my security badge revoked.

I lost all motivation, too, and some days I just left half way through the day because seriously, what the fork reason did I have to stay loyal and motivated? So give yourself a break, it's easy to see why you'd lose your steam!

I wish I had a picture of the face the teacher certification officer made when I explained what I had initially planned to do to finish all my course requirements by May. In related news, getting two classes waived and testing out of two others, heck yeah.

No. I did something really stupid and burned myself right on it.

I could take vacation or sick days but I will be paid out for the unused ones when I leave and I need the money more than the time off. I might have more time off than I can shake a stick at after I leave.

And to answer brian's question: I am definitely not putting in 100 percent and I feel like crepe about it because it's not my clients' fault this is happening.

things were similar for me the last time i lost a job, mtoes. my position was made redundant, but i was told that i had to keep coming to work for another six weeks in order to receive my severance package, and then they asked me to stay on as a temp and continue to manage my most complicated project for another two or three months because no one else in the department could handle it. it was really upsetting, but i felt obligated to keep working hard so i wouldn't lose contacts or risk missing out on good references. now i wish i'd told them to stuff it. i left feeling a lot more animosity toward that employer than i would have if they had just told me i was finished and let me pack up my stuff.

This is not exactly what I had in mind when trying to make a pdf file from a layered Illustrator file* but it looks kind of cool! It is for a pre-lab I'm trying to make where the kids walk around and look at individual stations with an instruction/information card and samples to play with.

*(seriously, Adobe, why the heck can't we export one layer per page to pdf? Stop adding crepe gimmick features that nobody wants and fix bugs and add useful things. Also, please do this while not letting our credit card information be stolen.)

Yes! My job here is done.

You must now go forth like the fembots in On Your Majesty's Secret Service and insidiously teach people how to tell quartz from calcite.

I was just thinking about the future while trying to avoid writing an essay, and I came to the extremely shocking realization that I have not gone more than a month without writing some sort of essay in 13 years.

that just
that just makes me feel really tired.

ugh.

I know this song is called "I'm so Depressed", so you'd think listening to it on repeat might not be a great idea. BUT, there are some songs that trigger this amazing feeling for me, similar to the feeling some Radiolab shows give me, or reading about the Large Hadron Collider. And this song. Ugh oh man. So good. Blowing literally all of my mind grapes. Oh P.S. this is a one-track one-man-band recording.

My work is treating me like shiitake too. As per usual, and I try to refrain from bisqueing too much because I bring it all on myself because I actually really care about doing a great job, and I am stupid in thinking that quietly kicking asparagus for a small company is going to bring anything more than manipulation and under-compensation. I'm not being a martyr--I'm just being me--but I still seem to maintain some belief that eventually I will be appreciated for my work. I'm seemingly the only person who has not been forced into requesting a lay-off so obviously my silly ways are still proving I'm valuable, but I could and should be doing much better. The weird thing is that I thrive on hard work. I hate not being busy and run into the ground. Which is probably not healthy.

Also not healthy, wanting to drive a stake into one of my best friends because she is having to do evil things at work in the position that I declined.
