Yeah, weaknesses suck. Usually my strength is I work well with people both customers and team members. My weakness tends to be something like I have a hard time saying no which means I can overburden myself. It usually means as a result, I have to assess my abilities, my workload and use tips/tricks to stay on top of my tasks. Like its not a real weakness so to speak but it is.

Also, further up this thread there was a discussion of calling places back about job applications. I had applied to a place in October and hadn't heard back, so I called on Friday after reading all the comments here, and they said they hadn't responded to anyone yet but that I would definitely hear something in January! I am so glad I called...this is my dream job. Working at a place that helps kids living with people other than parents who are involved with the court system in some way and advocating for them outside of the abilities of the court. so excited.

people actually ask the strengths/weaknesses question? I always just thought that was kind of an in-joke/movie cliche

Oh, no, it definitely gets asked. We ask all kinds of weird questions too.

I've been in a funk this past week, and as a result did not do the grocery shopping or clean my kitchen, meaning I have to pick up lunch somewhere. I could have made a pb&j, but I really need to scour the kitchen before I feel like even being in there. I was a total bum this weekend. I didn't change out of the pajamas I put on Friday night until this morning.

That being said, why is it so hard to find a vegan salad? Ha! I mean, right? I'm probably going to go to Panera and get soup and salad, and each salad has some kind of meat and cheese. Although the turkey harvest salad without turkey or gorgonzola still has pecans and pears, which I think will be delightful.

just finished my interview! it was SUPER preliminary, so no strengths weaknesses or anything like that. she just asked me to tell her about one of my internship rotations that was relevant to this job. I think i was all like "i really love working with seniors!" instead of telling her the details of what I actually did. she tried to prompt me for more details, but ugh, this internship was over a year ago, so I couldn't remember too many specifics. But it seemed like it went ok. I should hear by friday if I have an interview with the manager.

huh, wow. do they that get asked everywhere? or only larger places that have HR departments and layers of bureaucracy etc?

Yep--every single teaching interview EVER asks the weakness question. I always say that I am naturally disorganized so I have to invent creative, effective organization schemes, then I give examples of how I keep various things and myself organized. I also spin this as a strength in terms of helping high school students get themselves organized, since I can relate.

Yeah, every single job interview I've had has asked the strength weaknesses. I've only had 1 job interview with an HR person, the rest were managers so its not an HR thing, its a manager thing.

I definitely expect that if I get an interview with the manager they will ask me that. i gotta try to remember actual details from my internship last september! that's tough!

Yeah, its best to jot down a few notes and what not on your internships. Also, even if you don't get a job or like the job, the interview practice is a good thing.

Thank you! I'm also trying to remember that just because it's my first job, I don't have to take the first job I'm accepted for if I don't like the environment or whatever. The interview practice is definitely good.

I have a Q.

I keep a database for my work where everyone is listed last name, first name. When someone is a junior are they supposed to be listed like "Ross, Bob Jr." or...I'm having trouble coming up with another way to list their name that doesn't look inaccurate. Are you just supposed to leave it out? Why can't we just stop this stupid naming after trend anyway? It really gums up the works, guys.

Or I guess it's Ross Jr., Bob

I looked in our database and its lastname jr/sr/whatever, firstname middleinitial

Whatever you do, it just has to be consistent.

i don't know about databases, but in reference lists with the format "last name, first name" or "last name, initials," the norm is Ross, Bob, Jr.

Every single place ever.
