Jeez, netflix, thanks for scaring the shiitake out of me. I have about a zillion things in my instant queue, but when I just clicked on it, it said "0 in queue". I was freaking out, thinking I'd never remember all of the things I had put on there. It may have been the worst part of my day (first world problem!). But then I refreshed a few times and it all reappeared. So relieved! I feel like I should write everything down, though, in case it happens again.

Netflix is such a jerk. For a while it had a glitch where I couldn't access any Doctor Who OR Star Trek through instant. Damn near had a heart attack.

Netflix just did the same thing to me. Weird! The queue is back though so I guess it was just a temporary glitch.

I don't even have that! I can never find anything that fits. I once went to a specialty store for short fat dudes* and couldn't find anything that fit.

This is basically the clothes I own: one pair of jeans that fits, one pair of sweatpants that isn't ripped, a bunch of t-shirts, two beat-up sweatshirts, a couple pairs of shorts that I'm obviously not going to wear in the winter, one sweater that I loved that my mom's puppy completely mauled to death (totally worth it to cuddle the puppy, but, still, it was my only sweater that fit even remotely okay). And a tuxedo for choir. I have a couple skirts too, but if I wear those I have to be prepared for 38495097317 awkward conversations about my gender with everyone I talk to.

*I am not a dude but clothing is all gender specific for some ridiculous reason :P

You might need to get things altered. How about starting with the jeans. If those work, maybe see what else the same brand has in the same size and go from there?

I found the jeans in a free clothes bin. They don't have any tag identifying the brand or the size. Otherwise I'd be all over that.
I can't really afford to have clothes altered...I can barely afford to have clothes. And honestly I would most likely have a panic attack if anyone came that close to me with a tape measure.

Hmm. That's unfortunate that there are no tags. From my experience losing weight and going through sizes 28-4, it gets exponentially easier to find clothes the tinier you are. Nobody seems able to deal with body shape; it's ridiculous. The size I am now is frustrating to shop for, so I feel your pain. Having hips is apparently Bad.

How about if you measure the waist/hips and inseam on those jeans? At least men's clothing is made with actual measurements instead of the mindfuck that is women's sizing.

I finally got to sleep and the dog, who refused to go out at 10 pm, decided he needed a pee now and barked until I woke up and let him out, Now he wants to come to bed, but he can't sleep with me because of Leela. So he is grumpy and I am grumpy.

The thing is, they don't really fit very well...they're just stretchy enough to accommodate my weird shape. I'm all stomach and no hips. Men's clothing doesn't really stretch. The only kind of place I could even imagine might have clothes that would maybe fit me would be one of those stores for large women, and I look too much like a dude to even go in there without getting gender policed, which I sooooooo cannot deal with when I'm already dealing with trying to buy clothes. Plus I'm also incredibly short, which doesn't help.

Trial and error online shopping sounds like the best bet, but plus size clothes always cost more. Lane Bryant might have something, but from my days shopping there, they could be expensive and the qualify didn't always correlate. If you can get a brand and sizes nailed down, you can find good deals on eBay or similar--lots of plus size nwt stuff.

Do you know anybody with a Costco membership? They had some nice plus size pants and things this week and they come in 3 lengths. I think they were $15 for nice quality that would likely be $40 elsewhere. The clothes there are just on mixed tables, and the return policy is no questions asked. They also had some nice stretch/around the house pants in short lengths. My mom got some and really likes them; she has similar problems with fit.

I'm sorry this is so hard.

One of my worst shopping memories was going into the stupid tommy hilfiger store to look for a cute skirt. Macy's didn't have the size 26/28 left, and silly me thought the actual store might carry their actual products. Stupid saleswoman looked me up and down very slowly and then said " oh we don't sell *those* sizes here." I think I went home and cried and then didn't go to the lunch thing at school I wanted the cute outfit for (I was getting a science award; my mom was so pissed I wouldn't go, but I had no clothes)

Of course, I've never had to deal with judgement and gender issues, just fat hate, so I really don't blame you for not wanting to go shopping.

You're not kidding. I once took "inventory" and realized that I had sizes 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 11, 13, S, M, L and XL in my closet at once. And it all fit.*

*More or less, anyway. I also get you on the "hips are apparently Bad" thing. Geez, clothing manufacturers.

Clothes shopping is a pain in the asparagus and I hate wearing jeans. I'm all about tights and leggings these days. Jeans have never fit me right because I've always had a bit of a stomach, even when I was skinnier, so they'd be really loose in the legs if they fit me around the waist, or the low-cut ones would give me the infamous muffin top. Some "women's" jeans are like 97% cotton/3% spandex, which is better, because they have that little bit of stretch you're talking about, but it's not like the stretch is infinite.

You know what my favorite ever pair of pants was? A pair of maternity pants I got for $2 at the thrift store. I've never been pregnant, they were just super-comfy. They fit me normally in the legs/were short enough, but had that super-stretchy waist band meant for pregnancy bellies. Probably not the most fashionable thing in the world, but damn were they comfy, and if I wore a long tunic-y type shirt you couldn't even see it. My roommate at the time said I was crazy when I told her they were maternity pants, but really, they're just pants! You couldn't even tell unless I lifted up my shirt to show the waistband. Arrrrrrggggh. I also once bought a maternity dress off a clearance rack because it fit me. My boyfriend's mother asked me where I got it from and I was like "Oh, it's from the maternity section at Target." REALLY awkward long pause followed before I figured out that I needed to tell them that I wasn't pregnant and am just a person who isn't willing to spend more than $5 on clothes.

I have skirts in sizes 14, 16, and 18, and they all fit. In fact, I have one 18 that I can pull off without unfastening, and another that is nearly a perfect fit. I guess I have a weird body shape - stuff that fits in my hips is way too big in my hips and legs. And don't even get me started on stuff fitting my top half. You'd think people designing clothes for women would take boobs into account.

I got up early because my f-i-l was supposed to be here at 9. It's now 9.30, Mike's still in bed, and afaik, his dad hasn't even called. Usually his dad is early, so this is pretty annoying. I don't like getting up early on the weekend unless it's for something really awesome.

Day two of the half term holiday. How many disgusting things will I find discarded at work today? (sticky mutilated toy dinosaurs, tissues full of unidentified substances, etc.). Place your bets now!

CQ - have you thought about going down a different route for clothing? I'm thinking that instead of trying to find American-style clothes tat you like and fit well, how about going for a less-gender-specific look, like pyjama/kurta, or salwar/kameez?http://www.hilalplaza.com/men-pakistani-shalwar-kameez.aspx

Thanks guys! It was really cute, his mum was afraid she would accidentally feed me something non vegan so we turned up to bowls of fruit, nuts and a plate of ginger nut cookies which the Mr had told her I could eat. She also had soy milk for my tea. We had a lovely time. Both his parents are special needs teachers and I was going into teaching before I got ill and have immediate family members with special needs. So the afternoon was spent chatting about special needs education, photography and cats! His parents are well respected in their field and really interesting people to talk to asked himself later if they had "passed" and they told him they thought I was lovely. They were so welcoming and I got big heartfelt hugs.

Do you have a friend with a good "eye" for clothes, CQ? I have a friend who is so wonderful to thriftshop with because she just says "oh this will fit you" and she picks stuff where I'm completely skeptical, but it ends up looking great. I go into a thrift shop and come out with one black t-shirt that looks like my other black t-shirts, she has me going out with armloads of outfits for pennies.
