I'm grumpy today, so I'm probably being oversensitive, but why is it always ok to criticize skin color if you are pale? Really, I'm tired of people finding it ok to tell me they think I look like a freak and say I should use more bronzer/spray tan/go to tanning salon. I mean, fork off? I'm Irish. Yes, you can see my blue veins. I wear thick gobs of sun screen so I don't get skin cancer. I can't buy foundation easily because nobody makes it pale enough.

It's super hot day, so everybody is wearing summery stuff, and colleagues and students comment on my pale legs. Why, exactly, do I need to go get a tan?

People around you must be super rude! I'm as pale as can be but no one ever really says anything about it. I think the only time was one time my family remarked when I was in a bathing suit that I might even be paler than my also-super pale cousin. I could've taken that as an insult because they're all super cajun tanned, but whatever. Someone in that line had to pass this on to us.

One of my cats chewed through the cord to my expensive noise-cancelling headphones that I use to study. I'm hoping that the cord can be replaced, but it's just so frustrating. She did the same thing to a cord on my fiance's headset a couple of weeks ago and I ended up having to pay $22 for a replacement. In the past, she's chewed the thin wires to surround sound speakers, cords for the blinds (never chewed through and eaten, thankfully), etc. We've tried bitter apple spray, etc. but nothing seems to work. Luckily she seems to only go after super thin wires so I don't think she's in danger of being electrocuted, but ugh.

I love her, don't get me wrong, but I really don't like her most of the time. :-/ It makes me feel like a terrible person, but there it is. At least the other cat we have that does bad stuff sometimes has redeeming qualities, like being very cuddly.

It took me a bit longer than it should have to realise going to Leeds from Southern California for a weekend just to see Suede is a terrible idea. Financially, academically, etc.

It was a colleague's birthday so she bought treats including some gingerbread Easter bunnies. I can't help thinking that they have enormous breasts.

Science proves it. Women prefer tall men with large penises.

Obvious news is... obvious.

I can't even deal with this news story about the KS politician who apologized for using a racial slur by saying, and I quote:

"I am not a prejudiced person. I have build habitat homes for colored people."

LIKE CAN'T EVEN DEAL THAT THERE ARE STILL PEOPLE WHO APPARENTLY THINK (a) saying the n-word is ok in the first place and (b) that that is an apology.

I'm sitting here at my desk, my mouth hanging open. A meatball almost fell out.

A) NEVER OKAY

B) Definitely not an apology!

C) "Colored people"?! That was polite in what, the 1940s? I don't feel like that's really okay anymore...

D) Are you sure they were habitat homes for non-whites, or are you just assuming that because habitat builds homes for poor people?

One of the requirements of Habitat for Humanity is sweat equity, working both on your own home and homes for other Habitat families. I've worked on two and met the family, who was working with us, on one of them. So knowing who the homes were for is definitely possible. Not that that in any way mitigates the rest of that ugliness.

If you use the word colored to describe someone, you are racist.

Took kitty to the vet for claw snipping because his claws were getting too long and scary and I still haven't figured out how to get him to let me do it. I feel bad, but it was cheap, and the vet who snipped the nails showed me how to do it myself and let me snip maybe half of them... so maybe I'll be able to do it more successfully in the future? I feel bad about letting the one claw get that long and thick; I had been trying a strategy of snipping one or two here and there, but I guess I missed one completely and it was to the point where even if kitty didn't squirm and instead gladly offered his paw to me, I wouldn't feel comfortable cutting it.

I'm going to have the opportunity to be full time at my job in 2 months, but I don't know if I want it. So far, I'm still figuring things out and working late a few days a week. I think, by the time two more months rolls around I'll have my shiitake figured out enough to actually leave on time everyday and make the most of my 30 hour a week schedule. The extra money would be nice, but I kind of value my free time more than money. However, I don't really know how to tell my boss that, basically, i don't want more work. It doesn't sound very good to say that you don't want to work more, does it?

Well, it's how you frame it, I would think. Can you speak to having 'other commitments' or somesuch? Even if those commitments are watching Buffy in your jammies or baking or just hanging out on your sweet lonesome you don't necessarily have to specify. I would think it is possible to word an explanation in a positive (or at least neutral) light. If that's what you want and is doable in your personal circumstances, anyhoo :)

Tea - Swaddling in a towel is how we started but now I can do my cats nails while they are in my lap. Sometimes they get feisty but I tell them no and if they are really upset, I try later.

I had cream tea for dinner! Except I didn't have the tea part, just the scones with jam and "klotted kream". It was so good. I really want to eat more, but the klotted kream was so heavy that I couldn't eat another. Well, I could if I waited an hour or two, but I'll be asleep by then. I bought two pots of klotted kream, so I think I'll use the other pot to make a Victoria sponge as suggested on the website.

I'm a colour! A delicious shade of peachy beige.

The term seems so weird to me since we're all coloured. I think a three year old did me since a lot of my colour is outside the lines.

Monkeytoes -- Thanks! I'm not super familiar with how habitat works, as I have never done it myself, so I appreciate the explanation. That's pretty neat that you get to meet the people the homes are for!

Rachell -- where did you get the klotted kream? Did you have to make it? I want some!

I know I should spend tonight sending out resumes and stuff, but I'm so tired and stressed, I just want to sit on my butt and drink this wine I bought and watch the last DVD of Veronica Mars... but I haven't been being productive enough lately, but... Bah.

In the US, it used to be used as a derogatory term although you'd never hear someone say it these days, I guess unless you are from Kansas. It was a term also used specifically for discrimination. I don't know the entire history although I remember seeing plenty of older pictures with signs saying 'no coloreds allowed' or water fountains that would have signs that would indicate which one was for 'coloreds'.

I'm moving 7 hours away in two weeks (which I found out two days ago!), and I haven't packed a single box. I have made a bunch of lists of things I have to do, I have a few boxes and most other packing supplies, and a plan of exactly the order I'll be packing things. But I'm just procrastinating, like, a lot. Also, I realized that I'll only have two days off work between now and my official moving days - I should have maybe planned that better. I think I'll see if they'll give me another day somewhere in there. I need one of those days off to go to Ikea (1 hr away currently), since the closest one after I move will be about 6 hours away (eek!).

I'm rambling, which is fair representation of my brain over the last 2 days. I spent 20 minutes in the car today carrying on a full dialogue with myself outlining my packing plans. I think I need to just START. PACKING. Or maybe I just go to bed and pack tomorrow? <sigh>

i think plenty of older people still say it. my gramma, who is 85 and a liberal and voted for obama, called him colored. in her understanding it's nicer than saying "black". i don't pretend to understand and don't think it's acceptable.
