I just got Netflix so that I can watch Orange is the New Black. I blame you guys!

We already had Netflix but watched 8 episodes of this in a row yesterday because of everyone talking about it. It's really good! I'm home sick and really want to watch the rest of it, but I get annoyed when Mike watches stuff ahead of me, so I shouldn't do it to him. Then again, he's gonna stay up later than me tonight, so maybe I'll watch it anyway.

I randomly decided to sprinkle some nooch on a rice cake. I think it's one of the best things I've ever done.

I know we were talking about high school reunions earlier in the thread and my 20th was this past weekend (I didn't go). I was on the FB page and it was good to see pictures of people. One thing that struck me is that someone mentioned that my class still knows how to party and they thanked everyone for their massive hangover. It is funny because although lots of people drank to some degree in high school (myself included), I think of us mostly as goofy teenagers. Partly because most of my friends didn't drink. I also kind of figured the massive hangover phase would be gone 20 years later. I don't know, it just seemed odd to me. I guess I like keeping the past in the past when it comes to high school :) I'll still think of us all as the goofy teenagers we were though.

I made chocolate syrup on the weekend and rediscovered iced chocolates. none of that weak bullshiitake you buy at cafes, but instead the kind where it's on the brink of making you ill with how rich it is. SO GOOD.

iuno, I've been making it for years. found it online years ago, and I kinda adjust it as I go. basically:

ingredients:
- 2 cups water
- 2 cups sugar (raw cane sugar++. it seems to have a 'warm' sweetness to it. I like it.)
- 2 cups cocoa (I've been using Equal Exchange (Dutch process), but anything decent quality will work. cheap probably stuff won't be as rich, but your mileage may vary.)
- 1/8-1/4tsp salt
- 1/2 or 1tsp vanilla extract

method:
- bring water to boil in a saucepan
- add sugar, whisk until it's dissolved
- turn off heat, add cocoa and salt. whisk until it's all mixed.
- (it'll thicken on cooling, but if it's not to your liking now, you can add water or heat on low to adjust it)
- set aside to cool
- when it's cool, add vanilla and mix it in
- chuck it in a jar/bottle. store in fridge. it'll grow mould after a couple of weeks (I try not to leave it longer than a week)

it's super simple, but it's super good. sometimes it's a little gritty..probably cooled too much when mixing the cocoa in, but usually not a problem.

I thought I remembered hearing that this author specifically objected to people doing that for some reason? I don't want to go around spreading rumors if that's not true, but I could swear I remember a discussion about that on here once.

I was wondering the other day what place cutesy nicknames are actually used by the residents. I hear Philadelphia people say Philly on my youtubes but that's the only one I can think of. I'm sure I've heard chi-town referred to as such by some natives but I don't know if its acceptable. Everyone in New Orleans hates "nawwwwlins" unless they're drunk.

She objects to people posting her recipes without her permission, but that's not necessary for my amusement. I just want to see how the dishes all turn out.

You'll have to make sure 1strangegirlbygolly gets that memo! ;)

PS; I wanted to use up a bunch of dried goods staples I had, so I'm now eating split pea soup for dinner. Nothing says summer like a steaming hot pot of split pea soup.

I posted this on the book of faces, but I'm smacking myself in the head so hard that I feel the need to spread my idiocy to all my regular corners of the internet.

I know Indianapolis people say Naptown.

It's not cutesy, but Portlanders say PDX. Some groups of people might use "Rose City" also, but I think that's generally just soccer fans. "Stumptown" used to be a nickname that I think people used, but now that Stumptown Coffee's such a big name, it just gets used to refer to that coffee only.

It's not nearly as big a city (hence this knickname) but for Albany, NY, Smallbany.

It is. It's way too adorable for that particular city. When I lived there, I tried to make "Ninjanapolis" a thing, but it didn't really catch on. So it remains Naptown.

Sort of, but more likely people just say "the City" because you have to drive a couple hours to a different one. "The Loop" for, well, the loop.

Berrrrrrr-wyyyyyyyn you have to say a particular *way*.

South of there you have Chambana, and anything east of I-39 or South of I-80 is "Southern Illinois."

Here San Diego is just San Diego.

Truth. This bothers me more than I'd like to admit. It just sounds so much like something some bro would say.

Sort of related: I hate The Californians SNL skit, mostly because I'm tired of people quoting mush mouth lines to me. The only truth to that skit is that we do put articles before the names of highways and interstates.

I wish it didn't bother me, but apparently it bothered me so much when one of my friends said it on facebook that I had to vent about it here!

Haha. Yes. Or people from the suburbs (me) call Chicago "downtown" and Chicagoans (my friend Michelle in particular) find it annoying because "downtown" is a particular part of Chicago.

I'm not sure this is adorable, but I hear people here referring to West Virginia as 'the Dub V' and also a lot of 'West by God'. Very specific to my area, but Wayne County (bordering the one I live in) is a huge county that is pretty...country...and everyone calls the super country bits 'Out Wayne'. We even have those stickers, like you see for Hilton Head (HH) or the Outer Banks (OB), but ours are 'OW'. Or, if you go deep into Wayne, it's called Way Out Wayne, and the sticker is 'WOW'.

Oh, West Virginia.
