Thanks, CQ and LW! She emailed me saying that I wasn't charged because it said donations on it, but I'm new to the studio and I honestly didn't know what that meant! Anyway.

This is the first time in a month that I don't need to go to yoga at 5:30 on a Tuesday, which is my standing make-dinner date with my best friend (we've just been meeting up afterwards, but no dinner) and I am SO PUMPED to make dinner with her tonight!

Good luck babe, you can do it. If it's going badly just puke on her & run away!

This is one of the reasons why I don't live in NYC full time anymore. My studio was considered a deal for the East Village and it was $1200.

I ordered an iPad! Now I'm wondering if I should have spent an extra $100 for 64 gb instead of 32gb.

Here is an article with pictures of low rent places in NYC.

It is kind of amazing how little you get for your dollar.

I'm dreading this evening. It's not often I feel this way but I've had enough of a particular person treating me like a mug and I need to tell them that.

Yeah, as far as rent goes, we're pretty lucky in Portland. But I guess we must get paid less generally too? Cause otherwise I don't understand how people could even physically make that kind of high rent happen.

Are there any HUD houses in your area? Or does the government still have those?

I'm on my fourth glass of OJ this morning and I haven't drunk this stuff in years. I hope I don't get a tummy ache. Oh, maybe that's a first world problem.

I do think it's funny how many people I know are shocked that I talk about wanting to live in Montavilla (or Lents!) and think it's too far out to even consider, it's such a weird Portland thing...Montavilla has lots of awesome businesses, and it is under three miles from my current neighborhood that is considered one of the most walkable/generally desirable for young people in SE, but it includes 82nd so obviously it's not a cool place to live.

One of the many things that drives me nuts about Portland is that people think anything over a mile from where they live is VERY FAR AWAY. When I was in Foster Powell it was considered the other side of the earth.

She was right, it went a lot better than I thought it would.

Basically I just told my boss I'll be leaving the company at Christmas. I've been doing this job for 13 years and have been miserable for at least the last 2, probably more if I'm honest.

I will be quite sad not to work with my workmates anymore because they are, mostly, really awesome and I have lots of good relationships with my clients. But I don't want to be doing this job for 30 more years and now I feel like a big weight has been lifted.

I am probably mad to give up a stable job in this economy but I know I've done the right thing in the long run.

Well done, baps! A courageous step, and the right one. Making space in your life for the good things to start flowing in.

Seriously. Montavilla is literally a 15 minute bus ride from where I live now but it is SO FAR AWAY. I grew up around Foster Powell. It is not far.

Three bedroom houses for $1000 are definitely not the norm here, and neither are $1000 two-bedrooms in desirable neighborhoods like I have anymore, really, but I got this apartment 4 years ago so it's cheap. But yes, it is way cheaper than NYC. But also there are no jobs. My share of the rent is 502.50 but my take-home income is less than twice that. So it's cool that I can have an apartment at all here, there are a lot of cities where I would probably be homeless.

OMG leaves!!! How do you northern hemisphere people deal with so many LEAVES! I just spent about 4 hours raking. This is the third time this year and not all the leaves are down yet. I tell you, I never lived anywhere where I had to take care of it myself but I will happily trade the lack of great compost for a yard with only one deciduous tree that drops its leaves directly into my garden.
my arms are numb!
(it ain't all bad- with over an acre of grass to rake clean, it's a great workout, and i am so happy knowing that my 63-year-old mother is not out there in the cold doing it this year. God willing she sells this shitbox house and moves south before next fall so she never has to do this again....)

Oregon has the second highest minimum wage in the country. Washington has the highest. At least, as of last year.

Median NYC income is $49K (in 2011) but it has one of the highest income disparities in the world. source http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/20/nyreg ... .html?_r=0

And according to this Portland's is $50K. http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/41/4159000.html

I've always been baffled as to how normal people afford to rent in NYC. Someone explain it to me.

I think we just expect to pay a bigger portion of our income on rent. it's just what it is. even though I've lived here since 2006, saying how much my rent is aloud still shocks me, but that could also be because the only other place i've rented an apartment was in olympia washington. i only ever lived with my parents in san diego.

my rent is 1850 for a two bedroom apartment for my husband and I in queens. we each make less than what blondiefk said is the median, but it's significantly more money than i've ever made before, so i feel like we're doing alright. I know people who live in manhattan who pay the same or more for a 1 bedroom by themselves, to me that is nuts.

I went to apply for an apartment yesterday that- since my parents agreed to loan me money for school- was easily affordable, but a requirement of application and lease-signing was the rent was less than 35% of your income. 35%!!! I know very few people who spend less than 35% of their income on rent.
