Last year I moved to a conservative area for a (really good) job with the intention of gaining experience for a couple years and then finally moving to where I really want my family to live. The people I work with are as far to the left as it gets around here, which is still really different from me. I feel so lonely! I've never dealt with this before and I'm having a hard time. I know I need to not engage in political discussions at all if I hope to have anyone to hang out with, but it really gets to me that I have to censor myself. One topic that comes up, for example, is guns. Everyone here has them. I hate them and am disgusted by the thought of having my daughter in a house where they are present. Ugh.

Ugh... major stress headache and next door are arguing again. It happens most days. They had a shouting match yesterday where he drove off and I think that today she is bawling him out on the telephone.

My summer holiday is almost completely booked. We have flights to Dublin and a hotel, but I still need to book the flights back. I've booked my hotel in NYC, but I need to get my savings out to book the flights. Now I just have to hope that my new job will let me take 2 weeks off after 3 months of working there. Hopefully telling them that everything is already booked will help (even if that's not 100% true).

I almost think those are worth the money, and I'm notoriously stringy.

You could always go with the more awesome ones from Target for only $20!

WOW. I like how it specifies that these are unisex.

And yep, the Target ones are definitely more awesome!

I totally want the Target ones.

Does anyone know what non-vegan thing Ellen did before/during/after the Oscars that made someone tell other vegans to stop supporting her? I was in bed before the Oscars even started, so I'm totally out of the loop on this one, and I haven't seen any other comments besides SuperVegan saying on Twitter that vegans shouldn't support her.

She ordered actual cheese pizza for attendees (but was she really behind that?). I don't think she ate any though? I know she eats eggs from her neighbors, so she doesn't have many vegan supporters as it is. It was mentioned that there would be three vegans there last night: Ellen, Jared Leto, and Anne Hathaway. Jared Leto was eating salmon during a recent interview (http://la-confidential-magazine.com/personalities/articles/jared-leto-talks-dallas-buyers-club-and-thirty-seconds-to-mars).

I'm pretty sure she also said that there was a sauce/vegetable option, though.

So my mom has been getting really into genealogy lately and is sending me updates that I don't really care about. She said something about finding all this information about her grandmother's family and how they were in Virginia etc. in the 18th and 19th centuries, and I made some snide comment about "great, it's always good to know you may have had slaveowners in your family." So today she forwards me an old document she found that lists an inventory of some old ancestor's slaves. THANK YOU OH SO VERY MUCH!!! I was really looking forward to the day when I could find a concrete tie between myself and a human-being-owning piece of shiitake. I'm SO glad to know that I am related to someone who once saw no moral or ethical conundrum with owning another human being.

I am so mad at her right now.

Erika, a long time ago I read such an amazing book called "Slaves in the Family." It was written by a white man, who was a reporter by profession, and his family roots were from the South. The whole time he was growing up, he had heard all these stories about how his family was always "nice" to their slaves. Which, of course, he had the common sense not to believe. So, he set off on a mission to find out more and to track down the descendants of the people his family had owned as slaves and to hear their side of the story. Most (white) people in his family were so angry with him for digging up all this history, but he ended up meeting many african-american people - and (not surprisingly) many of them ended up being his cousins since white slave-owning men often slept with their slaves. Anyhow, the book is very well written, from the heart, and if you can track it down, you might find it quite interesting. xo

I can imagine it can be upsetting to know your ancestors owned slaves or were involved in the slave trade somehow but it also something we know happened, was horrible and still has repercussions to this day. I think you are allowed to feel what you feel but it is also something we know that came of ignorance.

Perhaps some of your ancestors also helped slaves. Maybe they were part of the Underground Railroad? Or fought for rights of slaves? Even if they didn't, what they did has nothing to do with you now.

I'm sorry, Erika. I think it's totally okay to feel angry about that. But like linanil said, what they did has nothing to do with you now. You wouldn't do that, and you vehemently oppose oppression at every turn, so be easy on yourself.

Thanks, guys. I realize my reaction was a little over-the-top, and I've written to my mom trying to explain why it upset me as much as it did... I think part of it is that while she has clearly been really interested in this whole genealogy thing, the slave document was one of the only things she sent to me directly, as if I would take special interest in it! Another huge part of it is that neither of us has felt particularly close to or warm and fuzzy about her family to begin with... I feel like I have a lifetime of bad memories and not feeling comfortable in my own skin around them that I feel I don't need to be adding to it with historical characters I've never even met! I, personally, find it bad enough that my grandfather told my father to his face he shouldn't be allowed to vote because only people with 4-year college degrees should be allowed to vote. Yeah, really wanna dig deep into that family!

Wow. I have to go to Target today to buy jeans for work, since my bike seat and chubby thighs have finally begun to gnaw through the fabric of my two current pair. I am going to have to work hard to resist the lure of cat leggings.

Also 1,000th post!

You have my sympathy. My neighbours are exactly the same. They are both in their 60's & are pretty deaf too so there telly is always blaring too. They argue most days. He swears at her, calls her awful things & slams out of the house. I really don't want to know what is going on in their lives but I don't have an option because they are so loud!

Most of us have bad people on our family trees somewhere. I have a truly awful (well known) person on both sides. The awfulness on my mom's side was a shock to the family when one of them started doing genealogy. They are still reeling from having to change their image of this person. But, I think it's still good to know where we come from.
