You can get an electric kettle here in the US for under $20 so they're not that expensive.

It's so true that every electric kettle I've owned here is SO MUCH SLOWER than every electric kettle I've used in the UK. Which sucks.

Stovetop, baby. Who has the counter space for an electric kettle?!

I think UK electric kettles (can't really speak about EU) are slightly different than US ones. After I moved here, I raved about my electric kettle - it was so fast and easy! So I convinced my mom to get one (in the US), and hers was so slow, she really might as well have boiled the water on the stove.

Yeah, I have heard that. It's something about the difference in electrical voltage I think. Probably why they're not popular in the US. The electric kettle we have at our cottage boils water faster than the shitty electric stove we have there, but not as quickly as I can boil water on my home gas stovetop.

My electric kettle is kind of awesome. Mr Moon gave it to me for Christmas and it is way faster than any other one I've ever owned. And it's one of the ones where the kettle sits on a base which is so much easier than constantly dealing with the chord.

If I had an L shaped kitchen I wouldn't have room for it, but I have a U so I do. And if I didn't have room for it, I'd get rid of something and make room, darn it!

Last year all we had was an electric kettle at my apartment. It took forever to boil water, so I would always just microwave a cup of water when I wanted tea. When I moved in to my new place this year, I found an old kettle of my parents that was in the garage. Soooo much faster than the electric one! And the microwave at this place.

I'm really excited to live on my own. I have a cat kettle (yes, a kettle that looks like a cat and it is every bit amazing as it sounds) and can't wait to use it.

I was just showing my mom how I can bend my thumb down to touch my wrist, and it made this awful cracking sound. For a second I thought I had broken something and was completely horrified. I was afraid I'd have to go to the hospital and explain how I had broken my own wrist! Does anyone else have weirdly flexible hands/wrists?

This will be my next step in electric kettles, whenever our current one bites it. I would love to be able to choose the temperature my hot water comes out at.

My mother has an insta-hot feature on her faucet, but the water is hot enough to burn you, but not actually boiling. She fills up a glass measuring cup with that water, then microwaves it another 2 minutes to get it to real boiling for tea.

I'm currently watching "But I'm a Cheerleader" on netflix. How have I never heard of this movie before? I'm only about half an hour into it, and it's pure gold. I mean, Natasha Lyonne as a gay (but doesn't realize it) cheerleader sent to camp to become "normal". And RuPaul is in it, looking the butchest I've ever seen. And, and... oh, the rest of this is gonna be so good.

Ommmgggggg hahahahaha. That movie was so crucial in approximately 99.99% of queer people my age's self-discovery.

We've gotten water delivery at the last couple houses (decadent but sooo nice) and the coolers have had built in hot water taps. I LOVE these. I hope we can get one at the new house (I mean, we can, but the landlord gets to provide potable water in whatever form they choose, so that might be some other way).

In general, though, using resistive heating to boil water is going to be less energy efficient than using the microwave, and probably slower as well, so I think the ubiquity of microwaves in the US might explain the lack of kettles (also, that people drink less tea).

Well in the US, tea drinking isn't all that common.

I don't even think I've ever seen an electric kettle.

Best. I watched that movie so many times with my college roommate. I love the 'manly' activity scenes. So good.

Do you mostly have coffee makers too? I don't drink much tea but I still use my electric kettle every day to make a pot of coffee.

Yeah, I would say a large percentage of homes in the US have coffee makers.

I make coffee using the electric kettle, no coffee maker. I do either pour over (have filters for a big coffee pot and for single cup) or french press.
