I want to echo everything about how great you did of being a vegan ambassador. That's fantastic. I am really impressed.
Just reading this makes me stabby and I want to flip out. I am impressed at your calm!

I wonder if she felt jealous or threatened by you at all? It seems a bit like she may have been showing off and trying to reinforce her position as the alpha-female. The only people that have ever behaved so nastily toward me are miserably insecure. I agree that veganism is an easy target and I commend your composure throughout the situation.
Composite of ingredients should be a new subnick!

Ugh, I would definitely have felt stabbity and I don't know if I could have kept my cool. But kudos to you for managing to go through the evening with grace! I hope someday B. can look back on her behavior with insight and be retroactively impressed with your patience. But even if she stays a dumbshit her whole life, you were a classy vegan setting an awesome example while she just continued to make herself look ignorant, petty, and immature. You totally win this one.

1) sorry that happened. 2) good for you taking the high road. 3) i'm pretty sure the individual is a closet vegan and secretly wants to come out. 4) keep the peace.

Is "B" short for "Bisque"? I agree with veganna, she probably railed at you due to her own insecurities or jealousy. You handled it quite well. I could have given facts and examples for only so long before I would have let her have it. You're a composite of ingredients, and just one of them is classy!

Ugh, what a nightmare. You handled it extremely well, and I'm sure your grace and her assiness did not go without comment after you left!

She probably just felt threatened by your ability to actually stand up for something and generally be awesome.

Thanks for the support guys! I wasn't even thinking in terms of being a good vegan ambassador; I just wanted to get out of there with my dignity intact. Plus, I suck at confrontation, and I'm the queen of snappy answers thought of ten minutes too late, which often translates to politeness as a default in the moment.
Hoodwinked, I think if I was there on my own and had come under my own steam I might have left a lot sooner. But neither J.J. nor I can drive and we were at the mercy of H. to give us a ride home.
I agree that she's probably really insecure. Apparently she's always been unpleasant to J.J. and challenges every word that comes out of his mouth. He said he's seen her be nicer to other people, so his theory was that she's threatened by the close friendship between H. and him. Maybe she saw me as an extension of J.J. and thus attack-worthy, or maybe she saw her position as the "ethical eater" threatened. (She seems to be all about whole foods and "happy meat". Maybe like jewbacca said, there's a closet vegan in there waiting to come out.)
As for "composite of ingredients", that's my best translation for what she said. The Dutch word she used was "samengesteld", which sounds less awkward but pretty much comes down to the same thing: it's something composed of a number of ingredients. (GASP! Food made up of ingredients! What is the world coming to?) Maybe Veg_Eric or another Dutch/Flemish PPKer can think of a better translation, although I quite like "composite of ingredients". It matches the level of ridiculousness of her horror at my food.
(Oh, and I like "vagina steak"!)

Oh, my - that does sound like a lovely evening! Was this woman raised by wolves? What sort of person behaves that way to a guest (or to anyone, for that matter)? You did the right thing to remain polite in the face of her rudeness; it just highlights her own bad manners, and it can't have won her any points with her boyfriend to treat his friends that way. As stated above, some people are just nasty, and that often comes from a place of insecurity; you could almost feel sorry for her. If I were you I'd simply avoid her in the future, and be honest about the reasons if asked why; no one is obliged to show up for that sort of treatment.

Bumping this to say that H. and the raised-by-wolves B. are getting married and J.J. and I have been invited.
If H. wasn't so important to J.J., I'd refuse to go, but they've been close friends for a long time and H. has stood by J.J. through some really difficult times. Knowing this has endeared H. to me despite his horrible choice in girlfriends.
I will be bringing bags of nuts and Clif bars. And drinking copiously. Luckily we're going to be dependent on public transport to get there, so we'll have an excuse to leave early.

I really hope your wedding gift to them is a basket of things like flour, sugar, spice, etc. You know, a composite of ingredients.

I just read the beginning of this for the first time. That woman sounds like an evil cow. Definitely bring sustanence to the wedding. Maybe trip her as she walks down the aisle...... (Ok that was wrong but you know....)

The great things about weddings is that you barely have to interact with the bridal party because they are too busy being bridal. So you can have a great time at the wedding and pretty much shun her all you want. Go and have a blast! Living well is the best revenge and all that.
