Your unofficial PPK Chat Room Committee is discussing moving chat away from Skype, due to continual problems with lag and with people not being able to get into the room.

If anyone knows of any good, free, easy-to-access chat room options, please let us know! We want everyone who wants to chat to be able to chat!

Oh, there was something we used last year when we did the group video chat that was good. It didn't require any software. I don't remember what it was. Nick, and josh, and alligatordisco were there, and I think so was veganfoodrocks . . . come in here and tell us what it was!

I don't think video chat is what we're looking for, though. I mean, it's cool if people want to have a video chat, but I know those of us who are regularly in the chat room now really like having a text chat, and we just need to figure out how to do it without being stuck with the constant lag that happens on Skype.

Does someone remember how to get in to the IRC chat well enough to write up simple step-by-step instructions?
I was happy with IRC, but everyone left, so...that made it hard to chat.

I think the issue with IRC was that, for it to really work right, you needed to download the program onto your computer, which people on work computers couldn't do. There are some web-based ways to access it, but they seemed really buggy.

I reckon that's the same issue with any program we try to use, including Skype. I don't think there's any way to circumvent the issue that people on work computers can't use their work computers to chat.

At work I use gmail chat. It's totally unobtrusive, too. ;)

Can it do a group chat?

I believe it can!

It looks like the download for group chat on Google requires Windows XP or Vista. I think that would mean that most of our current regulars could not use it.

You can connect to google chat through other programs eg iChat I believe, they don't make it super obvious.

It wasn't. It was an application just like Skype, where you can do one or the other. I just can't for the life of me remember what it was.

ARGH, okay, I looked into the Google Chat option. It looks like there isn't a way to create a "permanent" room -- someone has to start the room, invite people to join, and then if you log out, you have to be re-invited.

SOOOO...since now I can't even get into the Skype chat anymore, let's try something new. I created a room here (http://www.wireclub.com/chat/room/ppk_chat). It will have you create an account to join. Can people come join this chat and let's see if it works? If anyone has a problem getting in, PM me (on here, or Gchat, or Skype - username choirqueer). Let's see if this works.

I think I've removed myself from the Skype chat (or maybe it's just no longer showing in my conversations) — it was only working for me occasionally and becoming too tiresome to deal with. I'll see you on FB/Twitter/any other chat that develops. xx

One of these days I'll join. I still have never used Skype even though it was on my laptop when I bought it.
