if you like cute names and quokka-looks, you should also check out the pademelon ;)

and at my last house, we had both the super-cute pademelons and the super-poisonous funnelweb spiders. and a 3 metre long resident python. and jumping ants :( so yeah. we get all the cuteness, but it's offset by all of the stingy, bitey things.

Yeah, in Fremantle we had Rottnest Island and its quokka infestation just a short boat ride away, but we also had plenty of redback spiders, snakes, and the annual shark attack or three.
Oh, and drop bears, of course. But they're found basically everywhere in Australia.

I shudder to think.
They say that smearing vegemite behind the ears as a repellent doesn't work, but I still think it's worth a try.

I was just talking about these little dudes last night! I remember going to Rottnest Island when I was younger and coming back to the house to find little quokkas all through the kitchen! Sneaky little cuties

Wikipedia says drop bears aren't real? I'm confused. I'm also confused about the difference between quokka and pademelon.

After viewing gunk's link I was going to ask if they were a real thing. The distribution map shows them present in an area shaped like a teddybear face.

eh they can't get on top of Uluru - it's not called a natural wonder for nothing. I guess the other 'eye' is just coincidence?

don't let the humour fool you. we're mostly all a bunch of croissants

(based on knowing myself, anyway. I can't really speak for the others. mostly because they all seem like pretty nice people)

Well, you read about how vicious they are, right? They're set off by camera flashes, and they destroy the cameras of anyone who tries to capture their image. Australians know better now, but tourists.....

Drop bears may or may not be an imaginary thing

I thought it was adorable until I saw the tail. Too rat-like. Too “I will be in your cabinets tonight, ruining bags of pasta or expensive nuts.”

The weird thing is that I think possums are just fine and dandy, even though they look like giant rats except with white tails and gnarly teeth.

I can assure you they are waaay cuter face to face than a possum. Although they both have pouches.

We can appreciate Quakers too!

Besides, I'm mad at the Australians for playing tricks on us.

Drop bears aren't a trick. They're an important part of Australian culture!

Also, I appreciate Quakers. My grandfather is one, and he's pretty rad.

I can appreciate the heck out of some Quokkas but you know what I appreciate even more? Bilbies!

And speaking of dropbears, remind me to tell you (when I'm not about to run out the door to work) about how our tour guides in King's Canyon managed to arrange a sighting of the extremely rare and endangered pygmy koala.

Pygmy koala? Is that just a far-away koala, so it appears small?
