Not snacking during movies? My goodness, it's UNAMERICAN!

I usually buy a sack of popcorn the size of my torso and eat it all before the previews are over.

In college it was frozen mixed drinks in big cups carefully balanced in a backpack.
Now we class it up a bit and bring screwdrivers in an OJ bottle or lattes (carefully balanced in my purse).

Guess I don't eat during movies, but I like having a beverage!

Sometimes we would sneak in the rice dream ice cream sammiches, but usually it's sour patch kids or chocolate bars or whatever homemade treats we have on hand at the time. I had vegan cadbury eggs for my last movie, but they didn't make it past the previews.

I can see this being a little dangerous and messy.

I snuck a box of Toffuti Cuties into a screening for Kung Fu Panda. My husband and I had to wolf them down before the previews even started because they were melting very quickly. Needless to say, I spent the rest of the (3D IMAX no less...) movie feeling rather queasy and ill.

Let me just correct some assumptions about movie theater popcorn that I see going around here. I haven't worked at a movie theater in 10 years, but I have friends that still do and it's basically the same everywhere. The popcorn is just made with yellow colored canola oil and salt. In some places they used to use coconut oil, but I don't think they do that anymore. So, the popcorn itself isn't butter flavored, it's just made with a lot of oil and salt. I doubt the butter topping is vegan anywhere, but it might be! Where I used to work it was real butter! ew! so gross to clean.
Also, I don't think anyone leaves popcorn out overnight. It should all get thrown out at the end of the night and made fresh throughout the day. Popcorn is crazy cheap to make, and super expensive to buy at the theater, so I don't think any theaters would keep it around.

Hahaha, this reminds me of the "Seinfeld" episode(s?) in which they sneak Chinese food into movies.

But yeah, like ijdi said, movie theater popcorn (sans "butter") is pretty much always vegan.

My friend once brought an entire canteloupe in. I couldn't stop giggling. And my cousin's boyfriend used to always sneak KFC in. SO gross. The entire theater would reek.

This is funny to me because I took my (Brazilian) husband to his first movie in a movie theater, and I was so excited to get candy and popcorn and have the whole experience, and he was like, why would I be eating now?

It might be related to the fact that I never liked butter so I never got into the movie popcorn thing. who knows. If it was me, I'd probably just bring a luna bar and some trail mix hah but mostly for my husband who gets cranky if he goes long periods without eating.

Maybe. I don't typically snack during a movie (but I might buy some candy to snack on before it starts). I also don't eat popcorn. And the flapjack and stuff I had this Sunday was totally because two films means I'll be away for longer than I can be without food. I definitely get cranky if I'm not fed every four hours.

MMM...I love movie snacks. I usually have to bring them in though.

I like vegan chocolate and Kombucha. Don't get me wrong I love soda, but too much caffeine doesn't work very well for me, or the high fructose crepe. Kombucha lets me have a fizzy drink I enjoy, without the badness.

TJs Seaweed Snacks
Natural Fig bars

And I'm working on a recipe for Vegan caramel corn with agave instead of corn syrup, hope it goes well.

I contacted Cinemark and received this reply:

The popcorn we use is just regular Orville Redenbacher popcorn seed – no flavorings or additives.

All of Cinemark’s popcorn is popped in pure unblended Canola Oil which contains no trans-fats and is 80% lower in saturated fats than coconut oil, which is traditionally used by movie theatres to pop popcorn.

Depending on the degree of veganism – it would typically not be considered vegan with the components involved with a regular batch recipe. There is dairy product in the salt we use to pop the popcorn with. It would be acceptable for Ovo-lacto vegetarianism.

Attached is our ingredient/allergen declaration for our popcorn before adding the buttery popcorn topping, as well as pictures of the actual product labels for the ingredients used. We use Orville Redenbacher Gourmet Popping Corn for our popcorn.

There is no dairy in the oil used to pop the popcorn, but the flavored popcorn salt that we use to pop the corn with does have some dairy as well as soy. The butter topping can be omitted as that is added after the popping but the salt is usually added with the seed to pop a batch of popcorn.

If you would prefer to have a batch popped without the popcorn salt – the employees would be able to accommodate this request for you. There may still be residual traces of salt and oil in the popper even without any being added to the new batch that would be popped without salt or oil.

Please bring a copy of this letter if for some reason they were not aware of this. We have told theatres to honor requests for non-salt batches of popcorn, so they should be aware of this – not only for allergy reasons, but more due to recent concerns about salt intake levels.

Thanks,
Todd

bummer:/ guess its back to soup, burritos, and wine in the theatre.

On the rare occasion I go to the movies, I'm terrible about stocking up on snacks from the dollar store. Ours has a lot of vegan options, including dried fruit, mixed nuts, veggie straw things, and soda. My purse is big enough to fit our cat if I was so inclined.

My parents have a popcorn machine, and pretty much everything they get from the popcorn maker catalog passes my slightly-lazy vegan muster. That is to say, beyond corn and various vegetable oils (usually palm/coconut), none of it seems to be real food.

That said, the movie theaters (Pathe) in Amsterdam had BEER, so my movie snack idea of choice is going to be BEER.
