A bunch of the mothers in my parenting group want me to lead a talk on going vegan. Which would be great except one of the women is "veganish" (vegan except for fish) and she tends to get a bit over-enthusiastic about her pro-vegan spiel. I adore her passion and she is an amazing advocate for the animals. And maybe I'm just nervous for nothing. But if I have a shot at getting more people to go vegan, I really want to come across as reasonable and measured, so people can really hear the benefits and make choices for themselves. Not just go vegan for a few weeks because they feel bad and then revert.

I am probably overthinking this.

If anybody can do this, you can do this. All the posts I have read from you are so well balanced and supportive without being bossy (for lack of a better word).

I am super excited about being vegan but do not really talk to anybody about it and then rein myself in big time when they do ask.

UGH. I had someone getting all masturbatory about chocolate-covered bacon. I exercised Herculean restraint and hid the post before my fingers had a chance to do the talking.

She is a totally intelligent super politically correct human/robot, too. You'd think she'd get with the program, but nope.

Ugh...I am tired of seeing people posting PETA like 'go vegan' stuff over and over on FB. I do not think that beating people over the head with downed animal images works on the level they are hoping. What works (or at least from what I see) tasty forkin' vegan sweets and real info that is doable.

well actually, images of tortured animals won ME over to veganism. I agree it can get a bit much, but if it had been for vegan treats, I would never have become vegan (cuz I dont know any vegans in real life!).

Just got the "we need plants processed through animals because humans can't break down plant cellulose because of a lack of double stomachs and not chewing cud; meat is the only reason we have civilization and nations" commentary from a work associate...

One of those times you wish you could just deliver a swift kick to the junk and "win" the conversation...

ok so why then do we eat chicken? turkey? fish? pork? etc?

arent our digestive systems pretty much made to break down plant matter (ie the looooong intestines and also our hinged jaw and rounded toofs for grinding??)

if we were meant only to consume plant matter through the eating of animals i feel like our jaws and digestive tracts would be a lot more like a carnivores rather than an omnivores?

Silly Lisa; the bacon does all that for us.

Don't worry, no one is actually paleo. Basically, they try it, they feel horrible doing it, then they pretend they are doing paleo all the while eating things that aren't paleo.

Heh, my pet peeve is all the people who say exactly that about vegans :) The assumption that we all cheat, rubbing our naked bodies in bacon as we moan and writhe in pleasure-pain.

I wish Barnivore had a app. Trying to find good beer in the store with a shitty connection is so frustrating at times!

Yeah but I have known way too many paleo people. they'll sit around eating a meat lovers pizza while arguing whether sweet potatoes are paleo or not.

The VeganXpress app for iPhone has all the barnivore info, FYI.

Crisco is a delightful vegan alternative if you'd rather!

does rubbing cheese on your boobs help with the sagging the same way eating it does? what if it's cheese made from human breastmilk? is that vegan? is it too vegan to cure my droops?

If it's vegan then it won't solve the sag-hey good test! No need to scrutinise ingredients or contact companies, just rub a little on your butt and if it instantly plumps up then it's not vegan!

Paleo people do limit or eliminate dairy, don't they? I think? The rationale is probably very weak either way because the diet is based on nonsense.
