I usually only dirty my teaspoons and maybe two cups (if a recipe calls for 1/3 and 1/4 multiples, not just one). I take the smallest denominator and multiply. You don't need to use 1 cup and 1/4 cup- 4 1/4 cups is 1 cup, after all.

This is what I do! I almost never actually use a whole 1 cup measuring cup.

I love cups. I LOVE them.

I'm too lazy to weigh, cups are easier. When I first went vegan and bought american cookbooks I hated them. Now I wish I had the US version of VWAV, because I swear the weights are out in the UK version and I hate weighing.

Am I the only one who is totally neutral on the weight vs cups debate? I have cups and a digital scale, and just use whatever the recipe was written for. And... I don't mind one way or the other? Hell, I don't even care if a recipe is part weight and part volume measure.

No, I'm with you. If I can pour it out of the bag and into the bowl on the scale, cool. If I have to measure it, that's cool too.

Measure almost all the things using that cup into a bowl.
Do the dry things first so the same cup can be used for the wet things after. Smart!

but sometimes you have to do the wet stuff first and i hate having to clean it, just to use it right again..

Why would you have to do the wet stuff first? Most baked goods want you to pour the wet ingredients into a well in the center of the sifted dry stuff. (And of course you could always have multiple measuring cups; I have something like 3 sets of the feckers!)

yeah, i always measure the dry stuff first. if wet ingredients need to be mixed separately, i mix them in a separate bowl after the dry ingredients have been added together and set aside. i'd much rather wash two bowls than four or five measuring cups. but i could use lots of measuring cups if i wanted to, because i have four sets of them.

Mix it up a little and read ahead and do the dry stuff first instead! I know, I know, some teachers are dicks about reading ahead and put a wee sad face in your jotter... but you don't have to listen to them anymore! It'll be ok!

Yeah, I always mix wet and dry separately first, so I'm able to use the dry cups and spoons again. I also cook with a towel over my shoulder so that I can give spoons and cups that didn't have stuff like oil or agave on them a quick wipe rather than wash in between. It's all going to the same place anyway (my belly).

Yeah, I'm finally weighing in. I like cups better. Then again, I've never used a scale for a baking recipe. I just use it to weigh potatoes or, if I'm feeling particularly precise/crazy, pasta (like when a recipe calls for 8 oz of noodles and they come in a 16 oz package...I know that's half, but I'm bad at estimating). At the bakery I worked in, they did weights for the bread, just so it came out the same all the time. So I guess there are merits to both, but weighing seems more finicky to me. Also, I like washing dishes.

Another neutral here.

I just grab handfuls of flour. Guess I'm totally in the minority.

Pet peeve...I'm the event planner, and made sure to get myself a vegan lunch - it was a meeting followed by golf, so a box lunch.

Some asshat ate it. Then complained to someone how terrible it was. I hope it gave him the runs.

Uhh hi be my roommate plz.

In seriousness: I mostly use cups. Even though I've watched all of Good Eats and know damn well that weights are more accurate. The scale I have is actually a small postal scale and it's fairly accurate but the measuring cups are hanging right there under the counter, they're so darn convenient.

Ohhh, haha, no...see I only like washing my OWN dishes. Anyone else's (including significant others') totally gross me out. I'm such a germaphobe when it comes to people's mouth germs. I can leave pizza out on the counter for 24 hours and still eat it, but I won't take a bite of anyone else's fresh pizza if they're already bitten off it.

/crazy

I'm prepared to be converted to cups if y'all answer me one question.

Margarine: how the fork do you measure it with a cup? Do you spoon out little nobs into the cup and squish them down until it is filled? Do you dip the cup in the margarine tub and scoop?

HOW?! HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH IT?!

Yeah! Pretty much nobbin'.

With a brave heart and steely determination for what happens in the washing-up bowl.

(but pure aye, it sucks)

smoosh it in a cup, or guestimate based on the weight of the margarine tub.
