Welp. Have fun!

I've read it's flavorless and tough to chug down.

What I'm hearing is that it needs a little Sweet Baby Ray's.

I don't know what that is but I support it based on the name alone.

I've tried it, at work (um of course, where else) (I was not actively slamming code at the time). It tastes like chalky nothing! That's not a diss. Not exactly.

What's the difference between Soylent and, say, Vega One?

Soylent purports to be a nutritionally complete food replacement, not a supplement. Soylent doesn't come in any flavors.

I am fascinated by this concept, although I haven't yet been compelled to try Soylent. Here is a video of a guy who tried soylent for 30 days, also including an interview with the CEO of soylent, Rob Rhinehart: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8NCigh54jg

Was yours mixed from the powder or from a pre-mixed bottle? I ordered a box of bottles.

I've only tried the mixed from powder! The bottled stuff is supposed to be somewhat better and less chalky.

A bunch of my coworkers think it's really not terrible and consume it regularly in lieu of making decisions about what to eat for lunch.

Well, Vega One is a meal replacement, as opposed to other Vega products. I guess I don't understand the difference between a meal replacement and a food replacement?

The idea behind soylent is that you could stop eating entirely and only consume soylent. I don't think Vega One is claiming that, but I could be wrong. From what I understand, most meal replacement shakes are designed to actually taste good, which Soylent is more focused on not tasting objectionable and being nutritionally adequate. But, this is all conjecture. I do know someone who has soylent for breakfast every morning, and he didn't quite sell me on it.

I was curious after it came out but then I heard about the taste ("tastes like wet cardboard thrown in a blender") and the fact that cleanliness wasn't a priority and didn't have to be because they were considered a supplement and not a food. I know they moved last year into an actual factory with like cleanliness standards but I'm still not convinced on that aspect. Lastly, since it was really designed for the caloric needs of men, it was considered a little too high for many women but not sure if they now have a lower calorie version.

The culture that makes Soylent an actual product in our world really calls to mind a scene in Douglas Coupland's Microserfs, where one of the characters has some sort of mental breakdown during an epic code session and locks himself in his office. His coworkers devise an entire nutritional routine developed around foods that can be pushed underneath a closed doorway (ie, pop tarts). I feel like Soylent was developed for people for whom corporeal needs are a distraction rather than a pleasure. Not saying that as a diss, not everyone needs to be a foodie.

Yeah. Or at least for a culture that venerates that kind of monastic attitude, even if few would actually do it. Brogrammer asceticism.

I wonder what you're supposed to do for roughage, though. Eat a newspaper? Those barely even exist anymore.

ETA: I guess it has fiber. Poops all around.

Soylent will never take the place of Taco Tuesdays.

Everyone I know who's ordered it has ordered it to try, not actually try and live on.

I drink it for lunch every once in a while. Every version is slightly different, but it basically tastes like oatmeal syrup if that was a thing. I don't have any trouble digesting it and it holds me over until dinner just fine. All hype aside, it's just Ensure for dweebs. Perfect example, they send 'release notes' for each 'update'.

My father was like this. While he didn't dislike food, he didn't really care what he ate, and saw food as a necessary thing you needed to fuel your body, not a pleasure. I remember having a conversation with him once where he said he wished there were a pill you could take every morning when you woke up that would take care of all your food needs for the day, and then you wouldn't have to stop what you were doing to eat.

(This is such a generalization, but he was a computer programmer, and had a lot of the characteristics that go along with that stereotype).

Yeah, my dad sadly cannot smell or taste food anymore as a symptom of Parkinson's. I can see how Soylent might be an attractive, no-thought option for him.

There's this image of Soylent as a sociopathic tech bro thing-- you know, "Hey, I don't have to be involved in food in any way and I can just keep on slammin' that Java!" or whatever, right? But I spotted a WOMAN in my office the other day with a bottle of Soylent! I am not sure of her sociopathy status and that seems like something one doesn't just ask about, so it will remain a mystery.
