It's not sexy, but it's still the next big thing in typographical and page mark-up symbols, and I just invented it:

The pakeen joins the obelus, the pilcrow, and all the rest, as the page-break indicator.

are you actually editing on hard copy? your symbol is nice, but i'd rather eat a manuscript than mark it by hand.

WHAT??? that was NOT on the handout I got from my Copy and Line Editing professor.....:bites nails nervously:

I often edit hard copy, even if it's just for myself, before I start editing a file.

i WISH i had hard copy, unfortunately the trees would rise up and whip my asparagus if i printed out everything i revise. Also, the jerks i edit want to see every single change, and the minute it was proposed.....

I like the pakeen. Is there an etymology associated with its name?

It's derived from Latin paginus.

(I learned today that "pilcrow" might come from an old French word for "paragraph," which is equally, um... fascinating.)

i don't know, if we're going to be faithful to the originals, i just might stick with my personal word/symbol: pagina (symbol is a yoni, of course)

Well, in that case, maybe cool editors (shut up) will call the pakeen a "ufo," just like some refer to an exclamation point as a bang. It is becoming embedded into the culture!
