I think the electoral college is mandated in the Constituion? But even if it's not, I'd hate it to switch to popular vote, then the "losing" candidate would probably ask for recounts in tons of places in hopes of making up the (usually) small percentage of total votes he/she lost by. I think it would be a horrible situation. Also, if all states were weighted equally, it would be as unfair as it is right now. I'm not sure what the answer is, but I do think voting reform is necessary. There should be equal access to everyone (equal number of machines, equal time to vote, etc.) and no attempts to decrease voter turnout.

But see, Mitt Romney is a Mormon, so God didn't like either one...the Mormon or the closet Muslim;)

Well, then do as I said, making states proportionate for electoral votes, so if the vote went 48%, 51% and 1% each candidate would get that many of the state's electoral votes. That way 3rd party candidates might even get some electoral votes.

ETA- however this was recorded before the election...maybe the recent votes will change his mind on moving on this?

I'm already getting sick of people posting about southern states wanting to secede. It's a forking online petition, take it seriously if you want to, but I'm not packing my bags any time soon.

I think Texas wanting to secede is hilarious. Sure, we'll let you secede, once your oil runs out. Then secede all you want.

HA! I love this. You can make a very similar one for Canada and most countries in Europe.

I get that people on the liberal side wanting to move to Canada or Europe (like I do sometimes) because they are not satisfied with US politics and policies.

But people that are ultra-conservative and want to leave the US, I don't understand exactly where they want to go. Most countries that they would be comfortable in have massive social programs (hell, by conservative standards, they would be considered 'socialist') and do not tolerate religion is schools OR politics, don't allow guns, are tolerant of varying degrees to gay rights/marriage and do not have capital punishment, etc etc etc. All the things that they are trying to get AWAY from.

So just where exactly are they planning to go?

I think they could go to Pakistan. In a recent poll I saw they were generally pro-Romney there.

This. Isn't that why their forebears went to America in the first place, because their religious extremism meant they couldn't live within the norms of the existing nations? Where next? Antarctica?

Yeah, the anti-Obama sentement in Pakastan comes largely from this administration's use of drone attacks, which have killed a lot of civilians. It's not that I think Romney wouldn't sanction the use of drones, but I think people in Pakastan have legitimate beef.

I am also a bisque. And I had forgotten all about the windsurfing incident. Pure gold, that one. I was just thinking that I would hear people disagree with B. and instead of reference policy, reference orange, which I thought was pointless.

The craziest part about Obama's drone policy is that he considers ANY adult male killed in a drone strike to be a combatant unless evidence explicitly proving them innocent comes to light after their death. It's outrageously Orwellian.

I think the conservatives might like Uganda.

And a gay man in Key West, on top of that. He sounds like he was depressed anyway though so it probably wasn't really all about the election.

I just went to my County's website for work-related stuff and this was the headline next to a pic of wedding rings:

"Marriage equality
The King County Recorder's Office will open at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6 to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. The office will also be open for extended hours on Dec. 7 and 8."

Whee! Election results will be certified on 12/5 per state law, so the 6th is the first day that marriage licenses can be issued. At 12:01am. :D

Also, the King County Council estimates that marriage licenses for same sex couples will bring in $50,000 in new revenue in the next year and they "wanted there to be a nexus between that money and where it went" (quote: Joe McDermott, chair of the council's budget committee) so they drafted an amendment to the budget that allocates $50,000 to programs that help at-risk queer youth and approved in unanimously.

Happy-making election stuff.
