I think we did this before on the old boards but I figured we could give it another whirl. Personally, I was never a vegetarian but it was something I'd thought about since childhood, I've always enjoyed veggies and vegetarian food and knew that I didn't want to take part in animal cruelty, actively or passively. I actually remember hearing a few years ago that Moby was vegan and thinking that was a bit weird!
I first cut out dairy in my long struggle against diarrhea-dominant IBS, was stoked when I felt so much better and decided to try out more vegan recipes. After cutting out dairy for about a month or two (I think I would have had an ice cream here and there and some milk chocolate), I decided I was going to stop eating all forms of meat. A week later I was cooking up some scrambled eggs and I remember having off-smelling eggy farts and thinking 'I think this will be the last time'. Then I was vegan!
True story.
Tell me yours!

I mostly say I'm vegetarian, 3 years after becoming vegan. I didn't use the vegan word at all for the first 6 months or so. So I'd say I self identified as vegetarian while being vegan?

(I never had a true vegetarian stage, I was eating meat but less of it while 'going vegetarian' but decided to go vegan and I stopped eating meat and other animal products at the same time)

I went vegetarian first, in January 06. By September, I was vegan.

I went vegetarian at age 12 after a trip to visit family in Ireland. While hiking, I noticed the flocks of sheep grazing across the countryside and marveled at their general awesomeness. At dinner that night, I correlated the sheep I saw earlier to the mutton my father was eating and vowed never to eat meat again. I made good on that promise and later went vegan at 21.

I became a vegetarian* in 8th grade. I saw a squirrel get killed by a cat in our yard, made an offhand remark about how I was never eating meat again, and my mom said, "You'll never be able to do it." OH YEAH?!

*I did have a transitional period where I ate fish for a few months. But I never really liked fish so I might've had one or two fishes sandwiches at a fast food place.

i was "vegetarian" in highschool (the type that scraped the pepperoni off pizza and ate around the meatballs in my mom's spaghetti sauce), but quit when i went to university. i still wasn't much a meat eater though. then when i had graduated and was living in chicago, a bit of a lightbulb went off while i was eating a sandwich one day and i went vegan.

I'm a hypocrite. I was lacto vegetarian for about 14 years before finally cutting out the dairy.

Still in my closet (being used, ~4 years after going vegan): 1 leather belt, 1 pair of woollen socks and 2 pairs of mittens. I also have a wool blanket that my grandmother made me when I was little.

I was a vegetarian for 10 years before deciding to go vegan. I just had my 2 year veganversary!

I see no problem in using what you've already got, as long as you don't procure any new leather or wool.

I was vegetarian from 1995-2003, then was in transition a while, then stopped being in transition when I moved out of my parents house for good.

I've been vegetarian since 1998. The vegan thing was very very gradual.

I went vegetarian in 1998. I went vegan the first time in 2000 and I have had commitment issues with veganism. I have been on again off again since 2000. I am vegan now and I feel like it will stick this time, I don't know why I feel that way, but I do.

I was vegetarian for about 8 years before going vegan. I mentioned it in the Alicia Silverstone thread, but I big part of why I was vegetarian for so long before going vegan was that I had no vegan role models and didn't know any vegans, so I thought that veganism was way too hard and basically outside the realm of possibility for me as a "normal" person. I'm glad I eventually met a vegan person and went vegan! I wish I'd done it years earlier!

I was lacto-ovo vegetarian for a couple of years, then went back to non-red meat or pork-eating omni for a while before reading up on factory farming and realizing that there was no good reason not to be vegan.

I went vegetarian in my teens and at that time thought I'd love to be vegan some day but just didn't feel ready yet. I went through a pescetarian phase in my 20s, then slowly transitioned to vegan after 1) friends gave me V'con for my birthday, 2) I started cooking more and more out of V'con and discovered that I could still eat delicious food (including cake and cookies!) and not feel deprived 3) I checked out that website listed in the back of V'con (the ppk) and discovered that lots of vegans are cool awesome people very unlike the wacky PETA people, in fact lots of them hate PETA as much as I do!

I freaked out my mom when I was little - around 12 when I did a project on what an egg was. I basically stopped eating eggs and she didn't know what to do. Apart from that, when I was 22 I was vegetarian for three months first than went vegan for four months, got lazy and went vegetarian again. I stayed vegetarian for about 2 years and 8 months until my conscious got the better of me and I couldn't eat dairy and eggs anymore. I've been vegan for almost a year now and pretty committed.

I was vegetarian for 2 years before going vegan but I never called myself it once, because it wasn't a conscious thing. I just never ate meat, but since it wasn't an active decision I never called myself veg. Then I went vegan "cold turkey" and since that was something I do with a purpose, I use the term.

I was "eating more vegetables" for a few months so I could ease into vegetarianism. But the time the few months were over, I was vegan.

Yes, I was vegetarian for 20+ years before I went vegan. For the first few years I thought veganism was my ultimate goal, but in the 80s it seemed like it would be unrealistically difficult, so I just sort of let the idea go by the wayside. I knew one vegan but he was my my mom's age so I couldn't really relate to him that much. Then, in the summer of 2007 it just sort of occurred to me out of nowhere that I'd been vegetarian forever and had never read Diet for a New America. My next thought was, "You know what will happen if you do..." So I went online and discovered that he'd published The Food Revolution in the meantime, bought and read them both and knew it was time. I suppose if I'd really known any vegans I might have gotten there sooner.

Samesies! I don't even know when I became aware of veganism, but even when I knew that there was such a thing, I didn't know that there were dairy alternatives and baking alternatives for a long time so the idea of veganism was ka-razy! I didn't even eat tofu until I was 18! I had no vegetarian friends in high school (well, except two sisters who would say they were but their mom 'made' them eat meat at home, and then they would take the veggie sandwiches at lunch and sometimes that meant I wouldn't have one those forking croissants) or after for that matter. My brother bought some soymilk while he was home visiting once and I tried it and it was super gross, so I didn't try that again for a few years.
