Yep, vegetarian for two years. And a pretty reluctant, infrequent white-meat-only eater before that.

With the exception of cheese, my vegetarian years were mostly vegan as well, due to having a lot of vegan friends and me being one of those compulsive feeders who makes food for every gathering or event, no matter how small or insignificant.

I was omni, had decided to transition to veganism, discovered I was pregnant, ate whatever the hell I wanted for nine months, and went cold tofurkey from my first post-baby hospital meal(thank goodness my hospital let us choose our food and had veggie options).

Thanksgiving, 2002: I had several slices of turkey on my plate, and something just clicked. I got up and told my family that I couldn't eat this bird because it was once a living, breathing creature and I wanted no part in its death. It just seemed...wrong. From that moment on I identified as a vegetarian. Prior to this, I ate very little meat because I never enjoyed the taste. After adopting a vegetarian diet, I ate a lot of vegan food without really knowing or understanding the term, as I couldn't afford things like milk and cheese. I was vegetarian for another four and a half years before cutting out all animal products in 2007. One day in May, in a smiliar fashion to my vegetarian epiphany, veganism just made sense. I had done a little research on the subject, had been cooking vegan meals for myself for about a two years, and had been reading a lot of AR & vegan food blogs. It's been almost four years and I ain't never going back!

I was ovo-lacto from 12 to 18, and I ate a ton of cheese.

I was vegetarian. I didn't even think of becoming vegan, after all, the only reason I wanted to go veg in the first place was because I didn't like meat, so it was an excuse not to eat it. I didn't care about the animals until later. And now the animals are all I care about.

I watched the movie "Food Inc." and was talking about it at work. A coworker told me I should read "Skinny B*tch," and lent me her copy. Two weeks later I read it. One week later I went vegan and started to read "Diet for a Small Planet"!

Then I convinced my hubby to read the books, which he agreed to with the preface of, "Don't expect much, you know I love milk." Well, he followed suite shortly thereafter... now isn't that love?! hehe

I heard about the blood and pus in milk thing and stopped buying straight up cartons of milk when I left home and moved to Scotland. Veganism always seemed like the right thing, but too wacky or difficult so I just put it out of my mind. I dated a vegan for years and learned how to cook meat and dairy free and to do it well. Then he started eating meat, and I went vegetarian. Then we broke up. Then I met another vegan (for friendship, not humping) and finally took the plunge a year later.

I kind of feel like I was transitioning for 5 years but whatever. I got there in the end.

Yes, I identified as a vegetarian for about two years before going vegan. During most of those two years, I thought (and told people) that I would/could never become a vegan, but doing more research into animal rights issues associated with eggs/dairy changed my mind.

No, I just decided I was vegan one afternoon (at this point I didn't even know there was a name for it). Though it took a couple of months to fully implement it.

I was a lacto-ovo vegetarian from 1987 to 2003. I went on and off of eggs during that time, and wasn't big into dairy. Then switched to a lacto vegetarian diet from 2003 to 2007. Vegan since 2007.

I turned pescatarian when I was 15 (I loved fish... And I still did occasional cheese then, but mostly no dairy and definitely no eggs), then went vegan when I was 18... So, no I wasn't ever a vegetarian.

I was vegetarian for 10 years.

About 4 1/2 years ago, I started doing some searches and found the PPK and my local veg society. You guys helped me become vegan! I wish I had done it years before.

I went from omni to vegan. It was ethics that made me question my diet and purchases, and a little research made it clear that veganism was the right thing for me. This was about 4 years ago. I had a rocky start, though, because it was pretty abrupt. My mind was made up, but I felt obligated to eat turkey on Christmas because my extended family didn't know yet. That sort of thing.

On knowing other vegans, it did help that I had a vegan girl in one of my classes that semester. I didn't even know what veganism was before that. We never spoke, but knowing she existed probably made it easier on me.

I was veg for maybe 4 months before basically becoming vegan with one conscious infraction like 2 months after going for it.

I overeducated myself when I became veg and couldn't handle it anymore and had to be vegan!

Post subject:  Re: Did you self-identify as vegetarian before going vegan?

Short story: yes.

Long story: I went vegetarian at 4 or 5 because I freaked the fork out when I found out meat was from animals. My parents were always cool about it but when I was ~11 it got really difficult going to friends houses and stuff so I started eating the occasional pepperoni pizza. Then at 15 I realized that I didn't even like meat at all so there was no point in eating it, went vegetarian again. Then when I was 16 I found out I was allergic to eggs so internet searches for egg free baking led to vegan recipes which led to The PPK and Isa's recipes were awesome. I bought VwaV, even more awesome and then all the "vegan propaganda" and awesome food got to me and I went vegan at 17 in August 2007.

I chose no. Even though I was a vegetarian for about 8 years, I fell off the wagon for a couple of years before I tried veganism for the first time. It was not a successful attempt, and I was off the wagon for a couple more years. At the time I became a vegan, for the last time, I was not a vegetarian. The transition wasn't as hard this time, since I think I've gotten better at being prepared. Cutting out dairy was the hardest the first time around, but I surprised myself by not really craving it this time. Missing meat was never an problem though.

I've been a back-and-forth/sometimes/half-assed "vegetarian" for about 12 years. About a year ago I made the commitment to do it forever and am certain I'm going to stick to that. At the end of September of this year I decided to try veganism for a month. I'm very much still in that "transitional" phase (I have non-vegan food still in the house to use up and I have eaten cheese a couple of times at restaurants) but I can feel it really solidifying with me in a big way. Milkshakes were my favorite thing in the world until about two months ago and now the thought of one almost turns my stomach. It's a very weird thing.

I became vegetarian at 14 and vegan at 16. Then I went back to being vegetarian for a few years in college and grad school, for no good reason other than not knowing any other vegans or vegetarians and being lazy and selfish... then I went vegan again about 3 years ago.

I was vegetarian for a year then quit being a "half stepper" after being convinced that being vegan would be easy and how forked up the dairy industry is.

i was a vegetarian for a year before i became vegan. i probably wasn't entirely a vegetarian for the entire time because i accidentally ate gelatin repeatedly for about 2 or 3 months. i educated myself a little better after that and told myself i'd go vegan one day and then, a year later i did.

I was vegetarian for a few months before I decided that I was going to go vegan. Then it was a few more months of being mostly vegan before I made it official.
