I hope your family is okay Kelly! Yikes A.C. is really suffering.

The Bloomberg conference was very clear - I loved the ASL interpreter. We're learning ASL and its amazing to watch it in practice.

2 summons for disorderly conduct for surfers that refused to get out of the water at Coney Island. smh

There is a curfew in Hoboken tonight: http://www.hobokennj.org/
Its pretty scary that they had to evacuate parts of the hospital.

The sound of the wind is pretty scary, but at least it sounds like the storm will pass over night. Its about to hit land.

Power flickered just long enough to shut down my computer, but it's back... for now.

I'm just extremely happy that there's no lightning.

Our power is still on, though the lights have flickered a couple times. The wind is making some freaky sounds!

It's just cold and drizzly here in western NC, but on the other end of the state HMS Bounty sank off the coast. Two of my friends were very recently crew on her, and I was under the impression that one of my friends was still aboard. Neither were, and I didn't know anyone on board directly, but it's got me thoroughly shaken. 14 crew were rescued, one's body was just found, and the captain is still missing.
My parents are in the DC area, so I'm now worried about them, not to mention all the other boats on the east coast, with even more friends of mine.
:/

We're all good here. Flaming Suitcase is scared; she had a random fear of hurricanes before this. Partner and I went out to the corner store and came home to a very mad teenager. Role reversal.

Downed powerlines just set the tree across from our house on fire. Lets hope the fire dept can get this under control soon.

Hugs to everyone, esp Flaming Suitcase <3

Wow, Tofulish, I hope that fire gets put out quick!

I'm dreading what's going to happen in an hour at high tide. Oof.

Just got a text from my mom in coastal CT (where much of the area is flooded; a friend sent pictures).

"Having really cool hurricane here. Got all windows open. Sweet fresh winds flying thru. Kittens a little nervous and flustered."

WELL YES it is a hurricane of course they are scared!

"Lost power 20 mins ago, reading by candlelight."

My mother. I don't even.

Aaack! My MIL is in Acquakanak (sp?) area. I think that is right near you. I have a good friend on Valley Rd; a tree came down nearly missing his house.

Stay indoors!!!

i'm done with my work for today, finally--maybe just in time? i just got a message from con ed about shutting off power. i don't know whether i got it because my zip code is one of the ones they'll target or not (maybe they're calling everyone?), but i'm glad we made it this far. i wish i could figure out what's making all those weird cracky/poppy sounds outside. they're awfully unsettling.

Probably not.

Ugh. The news just reported the first known storm-related fatality in Queens.
