News is saying that a woman in Toronto died from flying debris. It's crazy windy here in SW Ontario, and I guess Ottawa is right in Sandy's path. Just some Canadian perspective!

The pictures people are posting from NYC are horrifying and heartbreaking. Hope all you PPKers and your loved ones there are safe.

Based on a statement from the MD governor, there are many residents stuck in the top floors of their homes until tomorrow when rescue crews will get them. MD had some late/unplanned evacuations due to river flooding.

At least Christie has his priorities . . . on a related note, though, I do hope that there is school on Wednesday at the school where I work. I would hate for the kids to have all their Halloween festivities canceled.

Lost internet here, posting from my phone. We still have power but work lost power (along with 250,000 other people).
On a lighter note, one of my kitties fell into my bathtub full of water.

I had visions of watching movies on my laptop by candlelight instead of working, but it's not to be this evening. paprikapapaya wrote: News is saying that a woman in Toronto died from flying debris. I live just east of the city and my nephew says it's crazy windy downtown (it usually is windy downtown even in a bit of wind, helped a lot by the wind tunnel effect) and while it's really unpleasant outdoors here, it's not that crazy. I have bugs flying into my apartment every time I go out on the balcony to gauge the sitch because I guess they're looking for a warm refuge. My younger kitty is going nuts with frustration because he's mostly unable to get the bugs coming in because they're smart and keep near the ceiling where he can't get them and then I rescue them when they come down to ground level before he gets to them because I can't bear to see him torment insects. He probably thinks I'm really mean.

I think we got really lucky this side of DC. I am feeling very grateful to be snug in bed with my freshly laundered fuzzy warm blanket, pumpkin brownies, hot tea, power and Internet. Molly is snuggled in her sleeping fleece down here with me, but she is grumbling and once in a while banging a toy in passive aggressive displeasure at not being upstairs.
It's really weird. The news keeps saying we are getting storm, but it hasn't even been very windy here--not even a window rattle. We've had rain, but I've definitely seen worse. But we are in the same storm bands as most of Northern Virginia. I'm not complaining! Just mystified.
I am scared for those hospitals in NY and NJ. How could they already be running out of generator power?

I wasn't expecting an trouble in Canada, but it's crazy windy. And the storm caused the school's servers to loose power, no e-mail.

I'm getting scared right now. Big gust of wind, BIG. Then little *earthquake like aftershocks like my building's structure recovering. I mean, minor in the grand scheme of things, but freaking me out.
*Argh, not really earthquakes, but like closed/locked doors banging in their frames from the neighbors. Indoor doors.

Tried to move macaw away from the large window for bedtime, but he had a melt down screaming panic attack when we moved him, so he is back in normal spot. It seems ok here.
For non-bird people: parrots can be the most pathetic little scaredy cats imaginable. A panic meltdown can cause injury or cardiac arrest. It's bizarre. We could see his heart pounding out of his little chest, his face turned red, he was panting, and thrashing around. All because we wheeled his cage away from the window. Nothing we did would soothe him until we put him back to usual position. Then he immediately calmed down and tucked himself into his sleeping position.
Birds are weird.
So, if it gets bad, we will have to take turns sitting up with him on the sofa.
Birds are a pain in the butt.

seems like the storm mostly passed my house without incident. (i love this google map. http://google.org/crisismap/2012-sandy the 11:00 update has me juuuust outside the cone. 1/3 of my tiny town was inside, and 2/3 outside.) the wind has died down a bit, but i'm still going to sleep downstairs just in case. no power outages. mild flickering and 2 super short bursts of loss earlier in the day, but that's it. the basement has very minor leaking along one wall. my dog held her bladder all day until 9:00 ha! she was reluctant, but had to go. poor pup. she went when the winds were nearly at their worst. last year we filled the tub with water, but it has a slow leak and all the water emptied by the morning. this year i cleaned out a 37 gallon rubbermaid and filled it in the tub. much better. (i offer that suggestion just in case you haven't hoarded water yet and are still in the path. also, collect your dirty water from cleaning things in a separate bucket, and use the "greywater" to flush the toilets. no sense in using somewhat fresh water to flush. stay safe, y'all!

This is so stupid.
There are fire/rescue crews in DC at a house with a big tree about to fall. If it falls, mucho damage will occur. Owners are not home, so they can't cut down the tree since they don't have permission. They are trying to find the owners.
Also, considering how close DC houses are, I'm assuming neighbors would be impacted.
I feel that if, during a called state of emergency, fire and rescue decide it is necessary to,cut down a tree, they should be able to do so.
