So, I don't know if people really do this, but I've made an okcupid profile to look for more queer friends. I've set it up so that creepy straight guys can't see my profile... but it's weird. I feel like a weirdo trying to talk to anyone! I also accidentally found one of my friends on there and we're a 99% match haha.

I would do that! And I know others who have as well. I've made a few OKC friends.

Also, where are you located? You can snag some ppk queer friends.

I have found many awesome queer friends on OkCupid! It's totally 100% normal, especially for queer women, to be on OkCupid just to find friends. Sometimes when I've explained this to people who mostly date opposite gender people it's confusing because I don't think that's a thing that happens on OKC for straight people much? Maybe I'm wrong.

OKC has definitely not worked for me friends wise. Never get messages from girls ever. Sigh.

I haven't tried for friends, but I did make one heterosexual friend through it! I was confused for about two months about whether we were exploring dating or just being friends but it's good because we're awesome friends and would probably suck at dating. we actually met in person then he found me on Okcupid. (I walked up to him because he was wearing a vegan shirt at a social for social justice people)

This describes the vast majority of my experiences meeting other queer women on OKC! So confusing.

Yes! Even off OKC too, honestly. I just never know what's going on ever.

Ditto to this! I'm glad I'm not the only awkward weirdo that this happens to.

For the past couple of weeks I've been messaging/texting/phoning/skyping with a guy who is SO AWESOME, but lives about 2 hours away (which isn't necessarily a deal breaker, but it certainly complicates things). We're hanging out next week, which is super exciting because we're super super smitten with each other. Oh man!

Also, he has a permanent cowlick, which is the best.

Well that's reassuring I guess :)
Haven't really messaged many people yet though. Somehow it feels more awkward than talking to people IRL which I wasn't sure was even possible. I'm in Sheffield, UK.

I'm a mess when it comes to finding friends....that's the main reason I'm on OKCupid but I never know if the person I'm talking to is interested in dating or not (and I'm bi, so EVERYONE who messages me confuses me :/)

Also, 'sup from another sorta-Midlander on OKC :)

ETA: sometimes there'll be an awesome-sounding straight woman on OKC who I could possibly get on well with, but I don't want them to think I'm just hitting on them. Why is this being social thing so hard? :S

I am actually a Midlander by birth (Derbyshire)... but I have lived in Yorkshire for nearly 6 years now so I kinda feel like a Sheffield person now.

I have messaged a few people now... Still feel awkward as hell, but had a nice conversation with someone this evening :)

So glad I finally found a room to rent in NYC. Out of the wilderness of rural Virginia I am hoping that dating like-minded people will finally be easier.

Aww that's awesome! Have an amazing time!

Regarding friends. I have it clearly stated in my profile what my intent is. It says friends, if they cannot read my profile I won't bother responding. If I ever recieve a message but it doesn't say they visited, I usually delete it pretty fast.

Now that I said that, I've had pretty awful luck with online dating. Met some cool girls, but never developed much beyond a couple of dates. Oh well!

I think the most telling thing about how I use okcupid is how I have 50 pages of hidden users.

I was talking to this really awesome girl on OkC but I kinda got really busy and forgot to reply to her last message. It's been almost two weeks...I'm awful. Do you guys think it's too late to reply now?

They probably just have visitors turned off. I've never had visitors turned on.

Thanks! I'll sit down and send a reply today.

You can turn visitors off? Oh geez, I didn't even know that was a thing.
