Before you became veg*n, did you like to eat meat? I'm curious if the majority of vegans did (or did not) like to eat meat, and if that influenced your decision to become veg*n.

I always liked to eat meat. : (
P, who never even thought about being vegetarian before, never really liked meat.

That's hard to answer because there were certain meats I liked a whole lot like crawfish, chicken, and shrimp

But stuff like beef and ham, I just didn't care about. I'd eat them but it was never a preference. I really disliked huge chunks of beef like in burgers and meatloaf.

I did, except for seafood. My dad made (still makes, just not for me obviously) amazing cheddar-fried chicken that I really need to try to veganize one of these days.

I liked almost all kinds of meat except salami, brauts, ham. Especially hated anything with grissly stuff in it.

I used to like sushi & sashimi, chicken, burgers, and most things smothered in BBQ sauce. I never cared much for steak or pork chops, though. When I was a kid, I would hide as much steak in my mouth as possible and spit it out in the bathroom. If that didn't work, I'd bite of tiny pieces and put them on the back of my throat, then wash it down with my drink, like a pill. (Why did my parents want me to eat steak so badly? Did they enjoy wasting their money?)

Also, while I had the occasionally BLT, I don't really get why people make such a fuss about bacon.

I loved it. My nickname every holiday season was "carnivore" because I would pile my plate with plenty of flesh. The night before I went vegan I ate carne asada and chicken wings for dinner.

I was a seafood fiend, especially for shrimp and in sushi, spare ribs, and Puerto Rican morcillas (blood sausauge). Nothing else in particular springs to mind. When my Dad cooked Indian dinners, my favorite dishes were the (coincidentially) vegan ones, like the dahl and aloo gobi, not the chicken curry. In fact I never really liked chicken that much unless it was smothered in apple sauce or fried.

I agree, bacon I don't really get. It certainly wasn't my favorite part about a pancake breakfast, I usually just took a piece or two because it was there.

eta: Oh yeah, I forgot snails. I kinda grew up eating snails.

I stopped eating meat when I was a freshman in high school (I'm 31 now) and I really wasn't exposed to a variety of foods before that. We hardly ate out and my mom cooked a limited amount of things, so I haven't had a lot of different meats. I remember really liking chicken nuggets (and still love nuggets) and I liked spare ribs from the Chinese restaurant. I was ambivalent about other meats. I don't know if it would have been harder had I eaten delicious, gourmet meals all the time. I decided to try being a vegan when I was a senior in HS and that wasn't hard for me either for similar reasons. I started eating dairy again at some point in my mid-20s and have only recently been moving back towards a vegan lifestyle. It is a lot harder for me now for some reason, despite the fact that there are so many more dairy substitutes now.

I don't think I went more than a handful of days without eating meat before I was a vegetarian. Even during lent (my family's Catholic) we usually had some kind of fish on Fridays. I'm more than a little ashamed to admit this, but my last birthday before I went vegetarian we had KFC for dinner, at my request.

I thought all of it was disgusting except for some white meat parts of chicken/turkey, but only if those pieces were "perfect" looking.

The only meat I can remember liking was chicken, and I could only eat it grilled. Other than that, I didn't like any of it. It did make it easier to give up everything when I decided to go vegan.

I used to love turkey, chicken and fried fish.

(Does anyone else feel awful admitting these things?)

I never had a meal without meat before becoming a vegetarian. I had never even tried or heard of most vegetables.

I loved shrimp and some fish (I hated fatty fish like salmon and sea bass), the skin of fried chicken (loved wings), and crusty, burned bits of Vietnamese grilled pork.

I hated pork chops, steak, and non-fast food burgers. I used to drink water at dinner out of a ceramic mug so I could spit mouthfuls of meat out when I pretended to take a sip. Gross. I would eat my broccoli, but sneak pork chops to the dog.

Hated it. Corned beef, liver and super-processed chicken were about the only meat we ever had in our house, though. I don't think I've tried any others.

I don't think it's bad to admit that you liked meats and/or ate them regularly. You're not eating them anymore, and that's what matters!

There were some kinds of meat that I really liked, but others that I was super picky about, and I usually didn't like just a chunk of meat like steak. I liked meat that was ground or chopped up so I wouldn't get gristle, and meat with good spices and sauces. I also grew up eating baba ghanoush and vegetarian grape leaves and dahl and lots of naturally vegetarian and vegan dishes, even though my family was never vegetarian.

My partner went vegan around age 15, and up til that point he pretty much only ate meat and dairy, and only in limited forms, maybe some crappy iceberg lettuce if it was drenched in ranch. I think he discovered most foods after he went vegan.

I liked cheeseburgers way too much, gaining 20+ pounds in the few years that I lived next to jack in the box. Now I want to puke when I drive by mcdonalds cause it reeks. I hated eating around bones, hated steak, hated seafood.

I loved most processed meats, like fish sticks, sausage/hot dogs, meat balls, burgers etc.

I used it eat it because I was lazy and it was easy. Part of my journey to veganism involved actively wanting to eat food that tasted like something other than blah.

Let's not allow this thread to become fodder for the meatmeat blog!

Honestly, who cares whether we liked meat or not? Let's keep the food talk vegan, please!

I chose other, because while I ate meat, it didn't really matter to me what kind it was. You can flavor meat, tofu, or anything else to taste the way you want it. So I wouldn't eat all chicken just because it was chicken. It depended on how it was flavored.

You would never hear me saying, "Man I want a steak!" But you would hear me say something like, "I could go for a chicken parm sandwich."

I have pretty much carried over all of the flavors and dishes that I loved when I was omni and veganized them. The only thing I really miss is sushi and cheese. The rest doesn't bother me at all. And those two items don't really bother me, but those are the two non vegan items I have not been able to replicate and miss the taste of.
