Hey everyone it's Giving Tuesday! Is anyone supporting their favorite organizations today? Which organizations are they?

These are two I give to here in Oregon:

The Living Room
I'm chair of the board and we serve suburban and rural GLBTQQ youth and are awesome and run on a shoestring so please give so I can sleep at night not worrying about our budget
thelivingroomyouth.org

Network for Reproductive Options
An abortion fund that serves Oregon and Idaho--the need is especially great in Idaho and no one actually in Idaho is raising money for it.
nroptions.org

What organizations does everyone else give to? Favorite animal organizations?

My mom and I both usually give to the local food banks and a local place called Rikki's Refuge.

This year, I have a bunch of kids who really don't have anything, so I'm doing gift cards that the social worker can give to the kids anonymously. Target, Walmart, and some fast food so they can hang out with friends. The social worker is amazing. We had two students who were wearing hoods all the time because they were ashamed of their hair. She worked out a way for them to go to a good barber shop that is popular with their peers, including bus fare.

I never realized that many shelters won't allow older teen boys. Some of our students have to stay in shelters apart from their families.

Aw lavawitch, that is really sweet of you.

On Sunday there was a giving tree at my local coffee shop and one item on the tree was bilingual Spanish/English books for an 11-year old girl so I went and bought a bunch of those. Really I know as someone who works at a nonprofit that giving money directly to organizations is more efficient but what can I say, picking out books for a kid is fun and I'm a sucker.

I considered donation efficacy, but decided that for now I would just rather directly help the few kids I see struggle everyday because that hurts my heart.

How are is a kid supposed to come do algebra when soap and deodorant are luxury items they can't have?

I didn't give anything particular today but I have monthly deductions from a couple charities as well as give semi regularly to others. I give to ASPCA, Planned Parenthood, Doctors without Borders, Shelter Box, Wounded Warrior Project, CARE and most recently UNHCR (for Syrian Refugees). I also have a few rescues that are local to Maryland/Mid atlantic (Beagle, Siamese, Grey Muzzle, a dog hospice, other animal charities). I also send food/supplies to a local humane society a couple times per year.

I usually give 10% of my online shop sales in December to a non-profit but this year I'm giving to poopiebitch's fund while her husband is in the hospital. In the past I've donated to Brother Wolf and Feral Cat Coalition among others.

i didnt manage to actually give anything on Tuesday because we just got back from being away for the holidays, we all picked up a head cold, then my husband and i got some stomach thing that wont go away and yesterday i threw my back out SO LIFE IS GREAT but my plan for the holiday season i havent fully cemented yet but here are some ideas.

my overall goal is to take my daughter shopping for things on various charities wish lists and then take her to physically drop the stuff off. last year it didnt happen. she was only like 20ish months around the holidays and i ended up just sending money.

this year we're going to go to Target to shop for the animal shelter one of our dogs came from.

then im trying to figure out what to do monetary wise (ie cash donations). im trying to figure out if i should just pick one or two charities and send a larger donation or to spread the love through several charities i have in mind:

*a shelter for women who are domestic violence victims. i donated to this place last year
*the shelter where we got our other dog from and one of our guinea pigs. i think i gave them money last year because they were building a physical shelter and previously had been taking care of the dogs in the pound (where my dog came from) and fostering other types of animals
*Girls Rock Campaign Boston-AN AMAZING program that is actually nationwide and is for girls i think 8-17 (?) and it's basically a summer day camp program where young girls go and learn musical instruments and build their self esteem and it's really great about fostering positive relationships between girls rather than girls tearing each other down. i participated two years in a row in the adult version and it was some of the best experiences ive ever had in my life and the adult version is used as a fundraiser for the little girls version. the money gets different things (equipment, space to have the camp, etc) but it mainly gets scholarships for underpriviledged girls to attend.
*i want to donate something for the Syrian refugees but i dont know where so i would love to hear places that are helping them that need $$
*planned parenthood

It's not Tuesday anymore, but it's always a good time to be giving. :)

We adopted our huskamute pup from NorSled, a northern California sled dog rescue. The women who run that organization work tirelessly for dogs that are very difficult to adopt out. We have a monthly recurring donation set up for them, and it's the one thing that we never cut back on, even with our income being reduced to less than half of what it was before the move.

Their 2016 calendar is on sale now, so if you know someone who loves husky pups, consider your holiday shopping complete!

I tossed a bit of money to the National Network of Abortion Funds and the university I graduated from.

I'd like to donate to a non-religious children's charity in my friend's daughter's name for Christmas (they suggested it, but don't have a place in mind). I'd love some recommendations!

Beyond special charities focused on diseases, I'm not sure there are a lot of non religious charities focused on children. Both UNICEF and CARE are non-religious and focus on children (and CARE is women and children) in 3rd world countries. You also might have some women and children shelters in your area as well that might be a good option.

You could call your local school district and ask about special programs. The social workers here collects donations from the community for everything from bus passes, clothing vouchers, hair cut gift certificates, etc. it makes such a huge difference.

Reading Partners, maybe? It is a literacy organization that recruits volunteers to tutor children who are reading below grade level. Tutors use a research-based program to help students catch up so they have a greater chance at academic success. I've had the chance to personally see how successful the program is by volunteering for the past few months.
