Oh boy. I might get a job 40 miles away. It's not in the country, either, so this is my chance to become fluent in Spanish as I listen to tapes while driving, I guess. My concerns are: 1) being a tired pig who comes home grumpy because I am feeling the self-sacrifice and lack of socialization 5 days per week 2) grinding my teeth on my way to work and being out of it because I resent my commute.

My options: get a room to sleep in a few nights per week. This is actually an option because I have friends near said job and I will actually make money.

Money aside, this is a hugely awesome job that I want. It will give me power in any future (read: closer) opportunities I will find. But yeah, 40 miles.

Library and books on tape. I did it for a couple years and it wasn't too bad but I had 40 miles with little traffic.

Mine is over 60 miles. Audible.com

I'm not the sort who gets pissed off in traffic though. It can get wearying on the way home if traffic is really bad, but I mostly just enjoy my audio books. In the mornings, the commute, plus a good book, plus a lovely latte has me awake and relaxed when I get to work. Again, traffic doesn't stress me since I can't do anything about it. I just leave with enough time that there is no late stress.

I will be getting mostly highway miles but the gas price makes me a little sick. I will be driving a nice Subaru but I don't know how using two tanks a week will make me feel about the world. At least I am vegan... didn't peta say we can drive hummers since we save so many other resources? I have to drive the the entirety of Seattle-Tacoma traffic---three counties worth. This is some of the worst traffic in the US.

ETA: but really, my job will be cancer research like I've always wanted.

My driving is mostly highway (DC area). It takes me half a tank each work day. Not fun, but nothing I can do about it since I can't move and there are no jobs here.

It's an hour and a half in the mornings if all goes well, but can be 3 hours or more if I don't get to leave before 2:30.

I also think carpool might be out of the question until I get to know some coworkers because it is such an odd pair of cities to commute between. Most people would never even go between the two--they are different types of cultures.

i had a 46-mile commute to my first after-college job. sometimes it took over two hours in each direction because of the traffic. i can't help you much; i hated my life for about eight months, and then i moved into an apartment three miles from my job.

i think a longer commute is kinda nice. it gives you time to yourself each morning on the way into work to prepare yourself for the day. heading home gives you lots of time to go over your day, de-stress, and chill out a bit before you're home. it's kinda nice!

I wouldn't mind at all if it were a train or a bus commute for 2 hours per day but I will be driving. I am insanely social so maybe I'll just try to make sure I focus all of my driving hate into positivity at work (i.e., I will be lonely in the car). I wish I could find a good biochemistry book on tape!

Congrats on the awesome new job! If you look at it like "it's not forever, it's for now" I bet that will make it easier. Plus- you have an awesome new job!

I recently finished having to drive that far for school for two years. I did not like it. I am not one of those de-stress-types when I drive; it's just not enjoyable to me. However, I am also now considering a similar (2 year)? plan. (I'm hoping since there will be no academic stresses the drive might be a little different). There is a great job opening up in a few months I'm trying to decide if I want to go for it. Decisions, decisions.

Again, congrats! And I do love me some books-on-tape! (for reals, I actually still have a tape player in my car)

Would taking the sounder train be a possibility? I hate the Tacoma Seattle commute. Especially if I have to drive to north Seattle.

How long is 40 miles driving where you are? I live about 3 miles from where I work but it takes me an hour to get there via walking and the bus.

Sra., a forty mile commute in our area....I would cry. I used to commute 24 miles to work (Seattle to Woodinville; basically the entirety of 520) and, while on the way there it was usually only half an hour, it could be over an hour and a half home, thanks to Microsoft traffic. I've also commuted 20 miles to Lynnwood, which didn't suck too much because it was a reverse commute, but sometimes I'd be stuck at Northgate for twenty minutes, just to get off at 45th. If I had to go through downtown...I shudder to imagine.

All I'm saying...that room would be a genius idea, both for your sanity and your pocket book.

Yay for awesome job, boo to commuting!

Have you looked into the cost of renting a room a few nights vs gas?

My first 2 years of college I had to commute 50 miles to school from home 5 days/week and the commute was at least 2 hours each way. I don't miss it! I'd listen to a lot of NPR and this was before the miracle of smart phones or auxiliary ports in the car so I was stuck with radio. I also listened to German language tapes. I tried to stay late to avoid traffic home. Is that something you could do? I also stayed at friends places some nights and it was a huge relief.

Now my commute is 40 mi and would take 1.5 hr if I left during commuter hour but since my schedule is flexible I leave home now at 10 am and leave work at 8 pm, which is pretty great. I also use the time to call my family, as a way to be social! My dad just started a job 60 mi away but it's a 2 hr commute because he lives in the country. I gave him my audible acct info and he listens to that over his iPhone now. I can't recommend audible and podcasts enough!

I hope everything works out for you!

I have a 40 mile, 50 minute low traffic commute. I do it up to four times a week, usually three. Podcasts totally save my life. I'd lose it if it weren't for weekly, even daily podcasts. If the roads are dry, I usually opt to ride my motorcycle. It saves on gas, but I have to fill up every day I ride.

When I was enlisted, in the mornings I had a less than five mile, 50 minute super-dense traffic commute. Podcasts helped but that was a miserable drive every morning.

I commute (to school) two days a week. It's a 20 minute walk followed by a 60-75 minute bus ride (reversed on the way home) each way. If it were more than 2x a week, I don't know if I could do it. It just seems like so much damn time wasted, though I use that time to relax and enjoy things I don't get to do at home (knitting primarily). And I am comforted by the fact that this is just til I am through my program in another year and a half.

The big question I'd have going into this if it was me: how long would you be expecting to do this? A year? Two years? Is this something you could sustain for longer than that without being miserable?

I go to school 3.5 hours from where I live. I stay over, so it's one trip out and back each week... but it's still a lot of time in the car. I hear you on the gas price/two tank a week crappiness (and I have a Mini Cooper!). Like everyone else said, audio books are the only way that the commute doesn't totally break me down, and I've listened to some great stuff! I get books on CD from the library a lot and when it's a really good book I don't mind being in the car that much at all. My drive is all highway miles so I haven't had to deal with traffic, but I'm not looking forward to the snowy fun that will probably be coming over the next few months.

i always consider my drives to be small but i guess compared to others' here they are pretty long- most days i have a 1 hour drive to get to clients or meetings or anything, really. i listen to podcasts, and they do save my life. in the US i had a similar commute and audobooks were a lifesaver (i don't have the concentration for audiobooks anymore).
most of my ride is traffic though so I can get things done in the car that you can't do on a highway commute (fix hair, eat breakfast, etc).

if i were you, personally, i would look at renting the room. gas is probably not going to get much cheaper, it's a bisque when the weather is bad (or when you have to be watching the news all the time to see where the highway is blocked and how you're going to get to your destination on time) and then you get a chance to have a social life- i think that's the worst thing about my commute is that i'm so far that i can't really go out for beers with friends or stay out too late- it takes me an hour to get home through a lot of sketchiness and passing about 10000 radar cameras and often police sobriety checks, and that's just a killjoy. you work a full day, spend hours in the car ALONE to come home to be ALONE, that's a bisque.

I've done a 42 km commute (26 miles) and I hated it so much. I didn't mind driving and listening to music and stuff, but the traffic at rush hour made me despise humankind, and the cost of commuting was huge (gas/car maintenance when I was driving and bus fare when I was taking public transport). It sounds like a GREAT job though (congrats!) so just don't let getting to and from the job wear you out too much.

Audiobooks. I had a long commute to a job I hated, and they saved my sanity. I recommend YA, because they're high interest but fairly low complexity--you can focus on traffic and still not miss anything in the story. Use your local library! There's no use paying for downloads or physical CDs when you local library probably has a decent selection in house or online.

Yeah, this is way more important than the actual distance. My 6 mile commute (by subway) in Stockholm took 40 minutes. Now I have an 80 mile commute, which is a 15-20 minute walk + ~2 hours bus/train. I usually sleep/listen to music in the mornings and read in the evenings (and yes to low complexity books, especially if I try to read in the morning). We've had a couple of 1-1.5 hour delays on the way home and those really get to me. I don't do this every day so it's OK for now, but there are people at my workplace who do this every day for years.

My commute is about an hour and fifteen minutes one way, but I don't do it five days a week (this is for school). The most I ever did was four days a week; it wasn't great, but it was bearable! It's probably worth it if it pays better and opens up better opportunities later.

i used to have what i think was a 20 mile commute but i was going from suburban MA into a city called Waltham which is basically a cluster fork of traffic. it would take me at least an hour+ each day. the drive was fine until i got right outside of Waltham and then it slowed down to a crawl with tons of idiots and it would make me want to stab my eyes out.

they call drivers in MA Massholes though so take that for what you want.

i hated it and now that i have an 11 mile commute that is mainly non-trafficky highway and can take me like 15 mins i would never go back.

however i also hated the job i was driving an hour too sooooo there is that. if i was driving an hour+ to a job i loved or was passionate about i would probably not care that much.

i also hate the job i drive 15 mins to currently sooooooooooo........maybe im just not cut out for this "work" stuff.

time to play the lotto!

My commute is an hour each way and I don't mind too too much. I get cranky when I finally hit traffic but the bulk of the time is clear highway so I never spend too much time frustrated, having to pee, suffering in silence and sweltering heat. I pass the time with music and podcasts, sometimes radio DJs if I get bored.

I don't like driving, though, and I spend way too much time thinking about how likely it is that I will be in an accident sooner or later (although I guess that keeps me more alert), but I almost always stop on my way to work to treat myself in some sort of way so I don't spend a lot of time pity partying myself. Like getting a diet coke or something for lunch.

One thing is that while I wouldn't say I get grumpy from my commute, I do feel like I don't have time for anything else in that day. Certainly no more driving. So if someone is wanting to do something with me, sometimes I won't be the nicest about saying "I logged 60 miles in my car today and you want me to drive over to your house to watch American Pickers to turn right back around and drive back to my house in two hours? Eat my crasshole"
