Hey guys, I'm sorry to be posting a request for funding on here, but I recall when I bounced around the idea of doing a DonorsChoose project in the past, some people had expressed interest in knowing when/if I did so.

My curriculum has us reading "The Bluest Eye" by Toni Morrison for our next novel. I could go on and on about why I would rather shoot myself in the foot than skip this text in our curriculum, so I will try to be simple: it's a beautiful piece of literature that is moving and incredibly written no matter what your race; so many of my students are poor and non-white and I believe will be able to truly find value in and identify with the issues the book discusses; Oakland is viciously divided along class lines that are so often race lines and getting my more affluent white students reading another perspective is so important; we have too few non-white writers in our curriculum. And it's Toni Flipping Morrison. Who is ridiculously amazing.

Anyways, it's a unit that has been taught at my school before to enormous success, and the kids have ranked it as one of the most important and moving units they've had. I want to make sure that we keep this going, but with over 100 students and only 40 copies of the book, that's rough.

Did you see if the publisher will donate some books? I got a few from AMSCO last year.

It's been really nice 1) having steady employment, 2) not loaning friends and bfs money, and 3) letting go of the idea that I need to give large amounts. I can afford $25, and that's $25 more than was donated before ($50, now with the code, less 15% to DonorsChoose, but you get the idea).

DId your school/district have to approve this for you? We are only allowed to use DC if we go through a lengthy approval process first, which takes most of the school year since they don't allow use of the school name or any photos.

LW, wow, that's crazy! Nope, it was actually my district literacy coordinator who suggested that I do a DonorsChoose.

And anyone who hasn't read The Bluest Eye... Do it. Toni Morrison is a goddess of wordsmithing. If I someday write one sentence that is even kind of like one of her sentences, I will be able to die happy.
