No, really.

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/hummus-co ... 00031.html

"Prodded by the largest U.S. hummus maker, farmers in the heart of tobacco country are trying to grow chickpeas, an improbable move that reflects booming demand for hummus."

So yeah. Go hummus eaters!

i'm fascinated that there was a farmer who had never heard of chickpeas.

I'm always astonished by the quantity and variety of hummus in even the most mainstream of supermarkets (even convenience stores). I mean, I adore the stuff, and obviously it's a boon for the vegan, but seriously, Shaw's (our local chain grocer in MA) has almost 1/4 of an entire very long aisle of about 50 different varieties (brands/flavors/etc.). Triumph of marketing? Economically awesome? I actually don't know.

What I learned from that article is that I live in the current chickpea capital of the US... go Pacific Northwest! And that, apparently, "Most of the consumers out there still don't know what hummus is," which I find baffling. Hummus has been a staple of my diet since the early- to mid-80s.

This made me realise I had no idea what a chickpea plant looked like, and that in That There America you can buy pots of hummus with pretzels on top! Mind. Blown.

Those have saved me on more than one Amtrak trip. It's the best hummus brand, too!
