I guess because going vegan requires such a lengthy explanation of all your ethics and all your feelings and all the alls in the world when someone gives up veganism they feel like it requires the same kind of explanation. I really don't feel like it does, though. I get why people give up veganism. Sometimes when I'm watching someone eat something delicious-looking that's not vegan I don't want to wait around until I can get home and make my own vegan version. Sometimes I want to go to a party and just know I'll have food to eat without bringing it. Sometimes I don't want to cook at night and just want chinese takeout like the people on the tv do. I get why people are tired of it, but I don't get why it's not okay to say "yeah, all the things I said before were true but it was too hard for me, I give up"

i'm pretty sure it's just post hoc rationalization used to ameliorate their own guilt at turning their back on their values for the sake of a flavor. but i'm pretty cynical and unforgiving, and i'm also delirious from meat deficiency.

I love Appetite for Reduction - its yummy food you can enjoy making, eating and sharing with other people, and it provides solid nutrition as well. Food isn't just fuel or medicine, its also a big part of our entertainment and social culture. If you miss that, I could see that you would feel deprived. This is why I feel that AFR is the most important vegan cookbook in print right now. I've recommended it to so many people, and at least 4 have bought copies! These aren't people with an interest in veganism, but they want healthy, easy food and enjoyed my AFR dishes. I can't think of another book that is so immediately accessible. Anybody could pick that book up and cook something tasty the same evening using either pantry ingredients, or simple stuff from a crappy, badly stocked grocery store.

I can put tomato sauce on an English muffin with extra oregano and I don't need any sort of vegan cheese, and that's like pizza craving solved. Plus meat being cooked without any spices smells like that burning hair smell you get a whiff of in the subway sometimes to me. Yeah, this is the case for me too. I get very confused when someone in my house is cooking maple bacon because I love the smell of maple but the bacon smell is gross.

Has anyone else read her first book The Great American Detox Diet? Yes, I read the whole thing and then forgot she existed. She proposes magical thinking about food, pushes detoxes, and fear of "toxins." She even pushed her 8 week detox plan when talking about her divorce.
I think that her explanation for not being vegan fits in with her overall world view. I don't care why become vegan but I think that approaching it from a place where certain non-animal sourced food groups are demonized as evil is a recipe for failure.

I didn't really know who this person was. I guess I heard the name around. Quote: I am still passionately devoted to helping as many people reach their ultimate health as I can. ... 13 years ago, when I decided to eat a vegan diet and live a vegan lifestyle, I did it for my health. Unsurprising. I’m sure the quest for “ultimate health” continues. Quote: My body started craving the “bad” stuff. Whatever. Quote: I avoided sugar and drank green juices by the pint, all in an effort to give my body the nutrition that I thought my body was asking for. Should have just had the sugar. Seriously, eat a cookie, drink a Coke or something. Er, how long is her epic poetry blog post? (scroll, scroll, scroll.....) okay, I'm done. Well, thirteen years for Jamieson, that's a decent enough run, all the best to her. With that said, just a reminder to any new vegan recruits. Only the best, please. Thanks.* (*Yes, I’m being elitist, sue me. But if the flakes drop out early, they can save themselves the self-inflicted guilt and mysterious deficiencies later on down the line. You’re welcome.)

I tend to think that people like us are just genetically predisposed to being vegan. Our genes gravitate towards plant-based eating as a diversification of species survival mechanism. In certain times and climates, those of us who thrive on plants are important to have around. Other times in out evolutionary past, not so much, so that innate behavior gets suppressed by circumstance until it can be expressed by some other progeny during favorable conditions. Then like all clever rationalizing apes, we come up with some gobbledygook to buttress what our genetics already decided.
