You know how you might not care for something that other people like, but you can kinda see why they might like it. For example, I don't really like artichokes, but I can see the appeal they have to other people. Ditto for carrots.

But there are some things other people like, or are even crazy about, and I just cannot understand why. Every time I see

Justin Beiber

I wonder W-H-Y???

What makes you wonder why people like it?

Do adults ever understand why kids like what they like? Remember Barney?

does anyone remember these shoes?

Image

i had two pairs of them in the early 90s--one black and one off-white--and i couldn't completely understand why i liked them then. they were ugly, but awesome? my best friend had some, too, and sometimes we'd just stare at our feet and crack up. well, a week or two ago i saw two different girls wearing shoes almost exactly like these on the subway, and i thought it was the weirdest 90s fashion element to bring back. it's not just that i can't understand why people like them; i kind of can't understand them at all. it's hard to explain.

Justin Bieber is gross. I think the shoes look comfortable and black doesn't show much dirt? What I've never understood is how people could get past the smell of tuna salad or tuna casserole and it's inexplicable that anyone would want to come up with vegan versions.

I get the feeling we've had this kind of thread before and shut it down because people were getting real shitty with each other. Someone prove me right.

In my skimming of the recent PPK goings-on, I literally JUST closed the Whine room thread concerning the closing of the 'overrated' thread. Like literally 2 seconds ago! History is important to learn, everyone, because history repeats itself.

But yeah, Bieber man.

Oh, same. I loved those things.

Is it weird that I never used to like mayo but recently found out I love veganaise?

I'm pretty new here and don't want to ruffle any feathers....I meant this thread in good natured fun.......truly :)

If you think it'll get ugly, by all means shut it down.

That being said, I'm the one who requested on Isa's "recipe request" thread a way to make Tuno.....and I always hated mayonaiise, but love Nayonaise.

You are correct, sir.

As far as Bieber is concerned, he is generous with his time when it comes to charities like Make-a-Wish and really, most of us are too freakin' old to be his target audience.

I think a better thread would be "Things that I liked as a kid that freak me out now."

I was super into boy bands as a pre-teen/teen (*NSYNC and BSB most notably), so even though Justin Beiber isn't my jam at 26 years old, I can see why he is popular. And hey, let's be honest, I've sang along in the car to a few of his songs before realizing they were by him. And then continued to afterwards.

This seems like a good idea - reminiscing about our younger selves and halving a bit of a laugh at our own expense seems like a safer plan, and it could be kinda fun.

I hated mayo and can't get enough of vegenaise.

I too had those righteous 90's shoes in black.

I like that idea. I was so obsessed with being "cool" as a teen that I wouldn't let myself be interested in boy bands. Instead I crushed on who I thought were bad boys. Can't think of any musicians right now but I had a super crush on David Boreanaz. It's so funny because I though he was so badass and looking back...not so much!. Also creepy for a 11 year old to fantasize about a dude in his mid (late?) 30s.

I also thought I looked hawt sporting all denim outfits in 1996. Where was my mother?!

Also, I hate omni mayo, love Veganaise, and frequently paint my nails yellow. At least I stopped wearing the denim.

Morphing into the things we liked when we were younger and now don't get: overalls, and I never worked on a farm.

Remember jelly shoes from the early-mid '80s? Ugly, painful, and sweaty?

Image

Though the other day someone had a legit reason for liking them, like they stretch if you have wide feet, or something. I guess it takes all kinds to make a world!

If you want a lesson on the diversity of human tastes, go wedding dress shopping sometime and look at what other people are ordering.

Oh my yes! I had a pair of red corduroy overalls - I was seven- and I loved them!

I had that conversation with some girl students last year about Ian Sommerhalder. I told them to back off and leave him for me because he is way too old for them. But I guess his hotness superseded his senior citizen status for them.

Off to google Ian sommerhalder.

Ian loves animals too and has a foundation for animal rights causes. I'm convinced he must be vegan. Nobody disillusion me if not.

I had these too- and I was in love with them. Until I realized the tread was just for show and I slipped on a patch of ice and banged my head. I felt so betrayed by my pretty/ugly new shoes. And they were canvas- so therefore vegan even!
