I paid for death today. I'm ashamed to say it. I took a hit out on a tuna, destroyed ecosystems, ruined habitat. I hate killing something innocent so someone selfish will eat. Notice I didn't say "can" eat. He could've eaten anything else I had in the house. I said "will" eat. Because he only wills selfishness. How I wait for the day when children are as indoctrinated into kindness, empathy, mercy, and compassion as they are in greed, selfishness, and consumption as they are today. I hope I live that long.

Woah. Climb down and step away from the cross.

I'm not even sure what this horrible thing you did was, it's so couched in dramatic metaphor. Whatever it was, unless you personally punched a baby seal in the face, I'm sure you're still doing your best and eating much more compassionately than most other people on this planet. Take a deep breath and forgive yourself.

I take it you bought some tuna for your partner...? Relax, it's not a big deal. Tell him to go buy his own next time if it causes you so much turmoil. Everything will be okay!

I bought some tuna for my grandson - basically because it was all I could get him to eat. I'm having struggles getting him to eat so many non-familiar foods. He's been raised on fast food, junk & convenience foods his whole life. He has several health issues and is on prescription meds for ADD, allergies, stomach pain and a host of other things. I'm trying to clean up his diet while he is with me this summer, thinking it would help him. But he's putting up a fuss, and not eating. Also, his father (who is my son) is not being overly supportive of my efforts because he himself lives on junk. It's just frustrating, and I needed a safe place to vent. Maybe I should've kept it to myself. I'm sorry.

Oh. Hmm. I recommend that you check out the subforum about kids/parenting, The Playground. I bet there are some PPKers who could help you figure out some wholesome and kid-friendly food.

Do you think he'd eat mac and cheese? This recipe is extremely delicious and doesn't scream "vegan" or anything.

Monidew, I totally hear your frustration and your sadness, and I really hear that you want the very best for your grandson and all the animals.

The problem with venting without context is that it is really hard for us to offer you any real support. So if you phrase your posts asking for what you need "I just need to vent: I hate buying tuna for my grandson!" or "Hey PPK, what would you offer a child who loves tuna?"

I know there have definitely been a lot of posts in the Playground on how to help omni children transition, esp if you are not their parent/guardian. There are some great subs to offer and if they don't want to eat it, then its better to focus on feeding the relationship and hoping for a longer term shift and letting them eat something non vegan in the interim.

We are all here for you and I hope we can help you find the support you need!

If he doesn't know what causes stomach pain, he might not want to try new foods that could make him hurt. Does he have texture/sensory issues?

Sorry you're having a hard time with this! It's really ok though. I mean, I know it sucks, but it's a non vegan world and we all love and care about non vegan people and want them to be happy and healthy. I get paid to convince people to eat the food at the facility I work at and none of it is vegan, but these are people who would probably starve to death if I didn't help and encourage them to eat non vegan food. It sucks from a vegan perspective, but I know that I'm helping these people who wouldn't have any other food to eat otherwise.
Please don't get too caught up on things like this and try think about the good that you do by being compassionate and vegan. You definitely didn't pay for death!

Banana smoothies and PB sammiches?? Pancakes with maple syrup? Tacos? That's all I've got, even though I know you didn't ask for help.

Eh, I say don't worry about it? The hyperbole I don't get. I buy tuna and whatnot for my cat and... well? Many of us grew up on junk food and survived to tell the tale (and went vegan! hoooyay!); I was a kid in the 80s/90s in Scotland with parents who didn't cook and so grew up on Findus Crispy Pancakes and chips and spaghetti hoops on toast. Whatever. I'm not saying it's the awesomest, but it's also not the end of the world. How old is your grandson? To call him selfish and without mercy seems a bit mean.

I thought of something I didn't include in my previous posts. Pretty much *anything* that you buy is going to contribute to death in some way. The clothes you wear were probably made in sweat shops, your vegan food was probably produced in part by undocumented immigrants who are abused, etc. This doesn't mean that we should hyper-focus and blame ourselves - it means we should do the best we reasonably can and advocate for change when possible. At this point I think it was more important to get some food into your grandson than to make sure it's vegan.

TL;DR You seem like a kind and sensitive person, so please don't be so hard on yourself.

Don't beat yourself up about it! Picky eaters are hard to deal with, and you can still try to get him to try new things, but its probably not going to work well if its a sudden change, you know? Transitioning is easier, especially when he doesn't notice other foods are gone.
