I got home from a week away Friday night to discover that it smells like something crawled into the corner of my fridge to die. I can't for the life of me figure out what could create such a potent, horrendous smell. The last time something smelled this bad, a cucumber had turned to liquid in my crisper, but I'm fairly certain I don't have a cucumber in there at the moment. So what the hell else could it be? I haven't had time until now to clean it out, but now I'm going in. (Wish me luck!) I'll report back when I've found the culprit, but I'm curious if anyone can guess it.

I voted other and am guessing it is a rouge bit of some kind of herbal "tea" that has gone in there to fester and steep and the floral scent has become so overpowering as to smell like spring up and vomited all over a liquid cucumber.

And if you don't make it out alive I will compose a sonnet in your honour.
"Onward good lepelaar! Into the fridge, yonder you do go."

I would be honored to have a pandacookie sonnet written in my honor upon my fridgely demise.

Someone kick my butt and make me go face whatever life form has evolved and gone extinct in there.

Lepelaar, I am a total fridge cleaning weirdo. The fridge is the only part of my house that is almost always clean. So please go deal with your fridge before I track you down and do it for you!

I voted broccoli since that stuff can smell rank if it goes really bad.

I said leftovers. I've had some pretty gnarly leftovers before.

Go clean your fridge! It goes quickly and you'll feel so accomplished! And your fridge won't stink any more! And you can come back and report on your disgusting discoveries! Go!

The fridge and the Tupperware drawer! I'm also "that person" who cleans other peoples' fridges when house sitting (if I have permission). My Tupperware cabinet is super messy right now so I think I will tackle it after I eat lunch.

A bit of 'open' baking soda is great at taking care of stinky fridges. (I also almost never clean my fridge. But man, it feels so great when I do.)

Maybe it's broccoli. We just, uh, "found" some that we had totally forgotten about. Uck. I'm kinda not in the mood for broccoli for a while now.

Ok, a few thing had to be tossed, including a brown, shriveled lemon, some moldy, shredded Cheezly, and a half-used tin of tomato paste, and I sniffed each thing as I tossed it and nothing individually smelled like the dead thing I kept getting wafts of. I'm actually suspecting that the culprit was the half-eaten bag of kimchi that was in there, even though I know kimchi doesn't really go bad. I sniffed it, and it didn't quite match the conglomerate evil smell that hit me every time I opened the door, but all I know is that before I tossed it, the fridge stunk and after I tossed it, the garbage bag stunk. And not in the good "Mmmm... stinky kimchi" way.

Oh, and what's extra disturbing is that other stuff has picked up and edge of the odor, even neutral smelling stuff like flour and apples. I'm gonna give that stuff some time to gain its equilibrium, 'cause I don't really want to toss it all. Hope it bounces back!

The nastiest, most pervasive refrigerator stank I've ever experienced was the result of a moldy ginger root. It was unbelievably potent and managed to pollute everything from the bread to the margarine. Moldy citrus fruits can be pretty horrendous, too. Blech.

If you develop an aversion to grocery shopping, you'll get really good at eating all the leftovers and using all the vegetables before they go bad--doing so buys you that much extra time before you have to go shopping again.

My fridge stopped being such a scary mess after three years of working at Trader Joes...and I married someone who also hates grocery shopping. But we both love cooking, so we don't eat out...we just end up eating bread and frozen spinach for a day or two before we finally cave. But the fridge is always clean!

lost beans?

edited, nevermind, you found the stink culprit. But a slightly ajar container of beans gone bad is the stuff nightmares are made of.

This is so true. Even a tightly sealed one somehow manages to unleash its horrendous stench.

We once had to throw out an entire refrigerator because of a lemon that had been mouldering inside for months. The stench from that one tiny shriveled-up lemon was unbelievably horrible. We could not get rid of it, no matter what we tried, so we had to buy a new fridge!

I had e-mailed a friend of mine earlier today and mentioned the fridge situation. She replied "Sometimes it's easier just to haul the fridge onto the street and buy a new one." I guess in your case, that was true, raspberrycomplaint!

Oof, beans. I once drained a can of beans into the sink and then didn't rinse the sink well enough. The next day, it was like someone had opened the gates of hell into my drain pipe.

Yup I was going to guess beans!

Totally been there with the drained beans + sink. It turned me off of beans for a while!

Onions and garlic and ginger and stuff like that can smell really rank if they've started to rot.

My guess is the broccoli. My sister used to have broccoli in the fridge all the time, and even though we always cleaned all the old food out and generally kept it very clean. we would have to wash it out with bleach water every few months just to keep the broccoli smells under control, and the problem stopped once she stopped eating broccoli everyday.

This thread is making me nervous about having produce in my fridge at all.

One time I opened a months-old container of Chinese food leftovers that had this orange mold that smelled so god-awful that it almost surpassed awful all the way back to oddly pleasant. ALMOST. It smelled like cheese or bile.
