I've spent my adult life in NYC, and have never had outdoor space. I own one resin adirondack chair. Now I have this awesome little patch of concrete with a view of the F train. What do I do with it? Fire pit? Blow up pool? If I put an outdoor rug down, will it become a feral cat litter box? So many questions.

Blow up pool on the hottest days, fire pit the rest of the time. Potted herbs &tomatoes.

Grow different types of herbs and muddle them for home made cocktails in your blow up kiddy pool :)

I like the way you think.

Tomatoes and herbs are on my list. Tho I am worried about ferals. And/or rats.

Right now it feels like it'll never be warm enough to need that kiddy pool.

Also, how high would a hammock stand have to be to support me in a rope hammock (the traditional kind, not the kind with the wooden piece to distribute your weight?)

I like how I assume the ppk knows everything.

Damn, fire pits are illegal in NYC. Wonder how much they enforce.

hammock is ace. depends on your hammock but usually the ones i have screwed on walls are about shoulder height.

I'm with Olives on the container gardening and firepit/blow up pool. you can make a pallet garden that is so cute for next to nothing. i don't think rats and such are super interested in gardens unless you're growing sunflowers or catnip.

Rats like sunflowers and catnip? Weird.

Ok I will look for shoulder height. The problem is all the ones I see online seem to be for the other type of hammock. I've got this awesome traditional hammock from Mexico I've never used.

Brooklyn enforces. I was at a party where they fired up a little chimney thing (there's a special word for it). It was very smoky, and the next thing we knew, siren sounds were getting closer and closer. We realized it was definitely for us when we saw a ladder go up the side of the building. Turns out those chimney things are illegal too.

Roof it over-- spare room!

Then they might raise your rent, though.

That's funny but less crazy than it sounds--we've already turned the garage* and basement into bedrooms. They haven't raised the rent, too happy to have free work done for them.

*it's one of those bklyn brick three families with a garage below it. We have the first floor and garage. We can't actually drive in it cause it's a weird angle that would rip out the underside of the car. So we made it a room.

Ordered a hammock stand--hopefully by the time it comes it won't be 30 degrees. I want to be in my hammock with a cocktail.

They are extremely polluting! Plus, a lot of people with asthma have severe problems with neighborhood fire pits. A friend has had to go to the emergency room several times because of this, even with being a prisoner in her home w/ closed windows whenever her neighbor fires up. But do grow some veggies and fragrant flowers!

And an outdoor rug made from recycled plastic. On a roll.

Maybe an extension cord with a toaster over attached will be similar to the fire pit?

We were posting at the same time, didn't see this.
Wow, never thought of that. Makes sense. It did occur to me the upstairs neighbor's balcony would not be so pleasant if we had one going.

Post subject:  Re: what would you do with a little concrete yard?

i was sort of joking about the sunflowers and catnip [but sunflowers are like rat crack, if my mother's birdseed bins are any indication] but if you're concerned about rats you could stick with herbs like mint, which is supposed to be repellent to mice, and fragrant stuff like basil.

if the firepit is banned then I think there is no choice but to make a bottle tree.
