I have the ability to walk away from weird things like this and act like it never existed. But my husband would run home to get gloves and create himself a bio hazard suit so he could open it! Then he would call the cops depending out what it is.

Dexter would open it!

I'm on pins and needles over here. While I don't want your skin to melt off because of the biohazard that is surely inside, I really want to know what it is! You live far away from me, right? So I'm safe, regardless?

I'm going back, but I'm waiting until my mom gets home from work. So probably not for another 5 hours or so. One of my neighbours went and looked for it this morning and it was still there.

The bag is about 1/4 mile away from the Boston city line. So you should be fine, unless the orange goo is an evil sentient creature that decides to take over the entire country once freed. But that's a chance I'm willing to take.

UPDATE: It's definitely some kind of hoodoo thing, and I'm probably going to die now.

We didn't unwrap the cloth, but my mom thinks it's probably a cow tongue. The piece of paper had a name written on it over and over. No idea what the orange powder is, but I'm hoping it's nothing deadly!

i love that there's all that ominous thunder in the background while you're tussling with the bag. is there a way to know whether it's a bad-luck hoodoo bag or a good-luck hoodoo bag? maybe you saved someone.

Google tells me that this was probably a "shut up spell" to keep someone from talking bad about you. The spell involves cow tongue, and a couple of websites list sulfur powder as an ingredient, which would explain why it smelled sulfur-y to me. The name on the sheet of paper would be the person they wanted to shut up.

Ewww, old cow tongue! But thanks for taking one for the PPK team and solving this mystery - I was wondering about this all afternoon!

Quick and dirty Googling says it could be either to silence a liar or to stop a snitch from testifying? If it is a cow's tongue, that is. And if you believe the Internet. No idea what the orange stuff might be but I hope you and your mom are not diseased or cursed!

I'm totally veganizing this. I wonder what would be a good sub for the tongue?

Brainy seitan, of course.

Btw, where the hell are they getting a cow tongue from?

I'm pretty sure you can just buy them from a butcher. There are legit (disgusting) recipes for tongue.

I am strangely excited to know more. I want this to become a whole intrigue!

...except not to RC. Because then it's SCARY. I want it to happen some other way.

But intrigue!

My mom got fed tongue as a kid. Apparently it looked, tasted, and felt every bit as disgusting as it sounds, so she never made that for us. I'm Czech, though, and my native people have never met an obscure organ they didn't want to eat over potatoes.
