I've been trying to train myself not to call the upcoming holidays in December 'christmas', it's hard! I really don't want to celebrate Christmas, as an atheist... but I do want to celebrate something. However I do not like any of the other options either, they are are religious too. Now you might say 'just celebrate holiday times and call it good'. You see, I have been in the past and it's all fine and dandy, but it usually just ends up being 'christmas' more or less. This might sound odd but, I want to start training myself for when a child is in my life. I do not want this raise a child and celebrate christmas, but indeed celebrating on the 25th just makes sense since so much shiitake is closed down that day. I don't know, it could be another day though, that would be fine.
OKAY if you survived my long winded explanation, bravo. Now I ask of you all, is there a truly atheist holiday around there? If there is not, can we make one up? If you are a grumpy anti-xmas but pro holiday athiest, what do you do?

Honestly, I think Christmas is an atheist holiday for almost everybody these days, even those who believe in God. None of the present-giving and santa-visiting and tree-decorating has anything to do with Jesus anymore. As long as you concentrate on the family togetherness times and skip the church, I think you would be fine celebrating Christmas.

The point of this is that I do not want to celebrate christmas, molly. And I definitely don't want santa involved. Snowmen-√, Reindeer-√, Holly-√, Tree-√, Santa-X, Angel-X
Festivus, that's amusing. I could give that a try. Though I was thinking the PPK could invent some pretty good ones... maybe something to do with tots? Okay actually in more seriousness, maybe something to do with animal rights/veganism would be interesting...

I was just saying, you could take the day (since it's a state holiday anyway) and just make it your own. Guess I wasn't clear on that. Just make up your own traditions and fun.

I love Santa. I love portraits where he's holding Baby Jesus, when he's drinking Coca Cola, when he's holding crying children. That guy's a riot. I'd be okay with celebrating Santamas.

Do you game? Feast of Winter Veil: December 15 to January 2 - holiday in the MMORPG World of Warcraft. This holiday is based on Christmas. Cities are decorated with Christmas lights and a tree with presents. Also special quests, items and snowballs are available. It features 'Greatfather Winter' which is modeled after [Santa Claus]. Do you like Star Wars? Kashyyyk (Chewbacca's home planet) celebrates Life Day: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Star_W ... ay_SpecialDiscworld? Hogswatchnight: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hogswatch#HogswatchnightAnd I think Agnostica sounds pretty sweet: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agnostica#AgnosticaNot a geek/nerd/dork? Then I can't help you. But I do think "Life Day" is a good way to describe a non-christian christmas, because you celebrate all the people in your life and bring them all together.

I can't believe you would even put the words 'not' and 'geek/nerd/dork' together in a sentence! *cries* I love the idea of celebrating Life Day actually. We could make little chewy's for the tree topper... And funnily enough I do 'game' as you say, including that one on occasion. And I have all the in-game rewards for that holiday. :P However, celebrating that one in real life I think might cross a line, I don't know. I do love however that they don't make it religious at all. And I'm sorry Fee that I dissed your beloved Santa.

Yeah, I feel at a total loss for what to call Christmas-ish festivities if not Christmas. We have a 2 year old, and so far we just celebrate Christmas without Christ or Santa (our son isn't really old enough to understand Santa, but we don't have any intention of treating the character as a real person as he grows up. It's just another story people tell around this time, like the Grinch, Jesus, etc). Considering we still put up a tree, decorations, and exchange gifts I feel like renaming it wouldn't serve much purpose.

We call our holiday party Festivus because I'm atheist, the husband's Catholic, and all of our friends are all over the place. I don't know where our Festivus pole is but we have one. We did airing of grievances one year, but never actually make it to the feats of strength. Ha ha.
I do celebrate Christmas too, but with absolutely none of the religion. It's nostalgic for me and was a tradition in my family. But I'm celebrating trees, cookies, Santa, family, and food.

I usually just call it Xmas (a la Futurama), but someday I hope to celebrate Festivus too, or maybe even start a new holiday tradition that isn't based on a TV show.

We are an atheist family, so we just celebrate the winter holiday. You know, when all of the schools let out for no reason and we give each other gifts for the hell of it. At least that is what I tell my kids.

We don't believe in Christ. Or Santa. But we eat, drink and be merry with family and friends when schools are out and offices are closed in Dec. We just call it family time. The rest of the country calls it Christmas I actually had someone respond to our holiday party invite with a "you can call it Christmas party to me". And my husband said nah it's a holiday party ...we aren't Christian.
