I'm pretty excited for Thanksgiving. I'm going home with my boyfriend, and his mum is going to make sure everything but the dead thing, gravy, and her traditional dairy laden casserole are vegan. It's really sweet. I'm going to bring chickpea cutlets, mushroom gravy, and maybe gingerbread apple pie to add to the mix.

I think the syrup the sweet potatoes sits in is far worse than the marshmallows on top. It took me 24 years to realize I actually like sweet potatoes...just not in pie form or with that marshmallow crepe.

sweet potatoes with marshmallows never featured heavily at our family gatherings. it was something i knew existed, but i don't remember ever actually seeing anyone eat it.
i don't care for cranberry sauce, from scratch or a can. i also just want plain bread stuffing (bread cubes, margarine, onions, celery, veg broth), no fruit, no nuts, no rice, just straight, midwest carb filled goodness.

my plan is tofurky, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce (already made), and my dad requested peas, so peas (but they're plain, so that's fine). following days will have bunches of sandwiches. happiness.
eta: my stuffing will have bread, celery, onion, broth, herbs. no fruit, no nuts.

I don't know why my grandma always bought canned cranberry sauce. Cranberry sauce is my favorite part now. canned cranberry sauce is just awesome it its own right, it has that smooth texture and you can plop the whole thing out the can and have this perfect can-shaped purple log, complete with ridge running around it. mmm. I like homemade, too, but it's really different. i'm scared of canned. i just do the ocean spray recipe - food process one bag cranberries, 1 whole orange, 1 cup sugar.

Canned is gross. I come from a make it yourself family. And, you guys? Make a ton, throw the leftovers in an ice cream maker and you will have the most awesome sorbet ever!

I've honestly never heard of sweet potatoes with marshmallows until I came to the PPK, it sounds disgusting.

Thanksgiving is definitely one of those holidays when consistency seems particularly key, for some reason. The things that always appear on my Thanksgiving table are: sage and onion bread stuffing, mashed potatoes, old-school butternut squash baked with EB, salt & pepper & a pinch of nutmeg, roasted root veggies (usually sweet potatoes, carrots, brussels sprouts, etc.), mushroom gravy, home-made cranberry-orange sauce...then I usually throw in some sort of casserole or something else to mix things up. Last year it was pastitsio, this year it will be this: http://elizaveganpage.blogspot.com/2010/11/kale-and-white-bean-pita.html

Honestly, all I want for Thanksgiving is Trader Joe's hummus and Living Spoonful raw herb crackers. That's ALL.

All I need to be totally stoked on Thanksgiving dinner:
Stuffing Green beans (sauteed in a little olive oil) White rolls slathered in Earth Balance and a touch of canned cranberry jelly
If you don't need veggies, I don't need a protein.

Wow, I had no idea other people's families did the sweet potatoes with marshmallows thing. I thought it was just my uncle being wackadoodles. Thanks to that abomination, I can't deal with eating sweet potatoes at ALL now. :(

All you need to do is chop those beauties up, rub them with some olive oil, salt, pepper, and whatever herbs you like, then roast them in the oven: vitamin A-infused yumminess ensues!

If you don't need veggies, I don't need a protein. I can throw down on some green beans, as long as they're not all gussied up in a casserole. Maybe some black pepper.

No pepper! Just olive oil and salt. I'd even settle for canola oil.
