I posted a question on the Products in General board in the mall asking if anyone knew if the Worthington shoes @ JC Penney listed as all man made materials were vegan, since I'm aware of the issue with some/most glues not being vegan. I had also asked if I emailed them should I ask about the glue containing a specific ingredient because I'm not very confident that I would get an accurate answer if I just asked if they were vegan. The responses I got there prompted me to post this. Hope it's the right board!

I am a very new vegan (since Oct 1). I had done (and continue to do) a lot of research reading books, visiting forums and blogs, etc. to arrive at the conclusion that in order to live according to my beliefs, I have to be a vegan.

Having said that, what do ya'll think or how do you handle some of those "disputed" areas? Regarding the post I referenced above, several folks said they just use the all man made materials designation without worrying about the glue issue.

Several times I've come across discussions talking about the near impossibility of ever living truly vegan due to the society we live in. For example, by driving a car one can't ever be vegan due to something in tires? Or that even when buying something vegan that was transported by motor vehicle, does that negate the value of buying something vegan? Or that there is some ingredient used in our computer and TV screens that makes them nonvegan, etc. etc.

I recognize the futility of trying to be a "perfect" vegan regarding things I can't control, but am wondering other peoples thoughts and decisions regarding some of these other issues, like the glue used on shoes? For people who have been vegan for a long time, what are some the other gray or controversial issues I'm likely to hit on at some point?

I know that ultimately each person has to arrive at their own decisions based on their circumstances and beliefs, but I've found good discussions can make me think about things differently or tell me something that hadn't even crossed my mind!

Please move this if the Mod thinks it should be somewhere else!

Thanks for reading!

Just do the best you can, that's all any of us can do! Nobody's perfect, we're just doing what we can to get by as "vegans in a non-vegan world"!

Two PPKers more experienced than myself say it all:

Kittee sez: "we do the best we can. Repeat."

Tofulish said (pardon me for misquoting if i misremember): "Don't let perfection be the enemy of the good".

If we think too much, we're constantly afloat in a sea of torture and animal byproducts. But we do what we actively can with what we have available. your mileage may vary.

Didn't some one just post a blog that said some who claim to be vegan eat meat sometimes? I don't call my self vegan and I never (currently) eat meat.
I think of vegans like olive oil-only a few are extra virgin but all are better than lard.

I'm interested if anyone knows this particular question about glue though. What is the specific ingredient in glue to watch out for? I ask not so much because of wanting to look for it to buy shoes, but I really want to make a pair of shoes one day, and I would need to buy glue for that.

I think it was H-Dog in the 'things you were shocked to find out weren't vegan' thread said if you dont eat meat/fish/eggs/milk/etc, you're vegan. the rest is just extra?
