Isa Chandler, you were awesome and those were a few of the most annoying people I've ever heard. Not including you and the doctor who was actually listening to you speak. Did the host have no idea what purpose you were added for?

Also, why is T Colin Campbell so angry?!

Not enough fat in his diet?

Actually, I think that's just his personality.

Isa, you were totally set up. They didn't want anyone there talking about awesome vegan cooking, they just wanted someone Dr. Caveman could yell at and belittle. You were so right saying they should have asked a vegan RD. I'm glad you were able to get a plug in for Ginny Messina's website. Maybe veg-curious folks will wander over there and read some non-BS about veganism.

BTW, your cats are awesome!

His only argument that he really kept falling back on was "B12!!!!!!!!!!" Then when he talked about going out years ago and trying to eat something....there was a LOT we couldn't do years ago but that didn't make it a.) healthier or b.) better. There's a reason we don't do things the way we used to.

i really liked it when he said that taking vitamin supplements makes you an evolutionary failure. because that's where we've gone wrong.

Yeah, so weird. There are loads of non-natural modern inventions and things we do to our bodies that I think we mostly agree help us lead better lives than nature "intended", so I don't get this appeal to biology when we talk about food. They didn't have sunscreen...does that mean I should go without and get skin cancer, or stay in the shade all day? Is that how I'm supposed to get vitamin D instead of taking a supplement? They didn't have the HPV vaccine or condoms, does that mean I should have unprotected sex and get STDs and babies? We used to not be able to do surgeries, so does that mean people with tonsillitis, appendicitis, cancer, diverticulitis, failing organs, etc. should be victims of their biology? What about people who need insulin? Other medications? Joint replacements? I guess there are some logical fallacies in my critique of paleo logical fallacies, but I still think comparisons to other things that we didn't used to have are important to bring up. I know I'm preaching to the choir!

I haven't listened yet, but I kind of want to.

Gosh, I just started listening and they're already doing really terribly on the science front.

Paleo dude is comparing paleo diet to a random veg diet, which could mean a lot of things. Like, the proper controls aren't in place. What they should do is strict super healthy paleo and strict super healthy vegan (like all whole foods with appropriate or otherwise all essential nutrients accounted for) with the same exercise plan, same lifestyle choices, similar genetic profiles, etc., and look at those metrics. You just can't compare otherwise and that's why we use animals in a lab where every aspect of their life can be controlled, even genetics. Why do we rely on these health surveys that aren't set up well or don't have a random or large enough sample size or don't have the appropriate controls? Bad science, and bad doctors for quoting them! And then the neutral dr. said well the cavemen's lifespan was low as evidence against paleo. You can't attribute that to diet, like how would you even know unless maybe you saw like a broken hip due to osteoporosis, so that's not a valid point. And then the paleo dude is like, oh it's low because a couple could be in their 80s but have 2 kids die in childbirth so the avg is 40 years. But that's not how they figure out avg lifespan, right? They look at adult skeletons and figure out the age of death in that way. If they don't, they should!

Was this supposed to be a health chat? Because yeah, it seems weird to have a cookbook author as the vegan health authority (no offense, Isa!!!!!! Just seems wrong to pit you against 3 MDs, when that's not your focus) rather than a vegan doctor or vegan RD.

In any case, I don't even see why we need to belabor the point of paleo vs vegan. It seems like you can be really healthy on both if you are not consuming the SAD. They seem pretty equal, so then it just comes down to ethics.

Life expectancy is always caclulated as an average of the entire population so infant mortality is always averaged in. This is true for both past and current populations. So in that respect, paloe dude was right. It's really really difficult to ascertain the reasons for average life expectancy for past populations because so many factors are at play (diet, infectious disease, environmental dangers, etc.)

I agree that we shouldn't be too quick to jump on this whole "cooking" bandwagon.

Humans have only been doing it for a couple hundred thousand years.

The jury's still out!

Today I spent an hour straining to develop the ability to synthesize B12, but I just pooped my pants. :( #FailedToEvolve

but isn't almost all naturally occurring b12 synthesized by bacteria in the gut? you were so much closer than you thought. you're, like, one step away from being completely self-sustaining. one terrible step.

No, you succeeded. Now eat that poop before the b12 degrades!
