Oh cilantro definitely will often smell like wet dog at a grocery store for sure, but it has nothing to do with the plant itself, that's just the smell of rotting stems/leaves. Cilantro is so delicate, it rots easy. All greens will smell like that if left nasty for long enough though.

i've never smelled it with anything else! i've handled plenty of sad, slimy greens in the garden and in the bottom of bags of salad and wherever, but they just smell like bad vegetables. only cilantro smells like damp fur. now i want to put a bunch of different leafy things in tupperwares and test it.

If you want to smell something really gross, put parsley in a cup of water (stems in, leaves out, like a flower arrangement) and smell the water after a couple of days.

But if you want to smell something REALLY gross, go cut a bunch of tall grasses and put those in water and then smell that water after like a week.

I should probably start my own thread for "if you want to smell something really gross". I have a wealth of information on the subject.

I wonder if 19-20 is the magic window for changing your mind about cilantro. I hated it till then, but had only had it in Mexican, although I don't think I would say it ever tasted like soap to me. Then I started eating Thai and discovered I liked it in that. Thai was the gateway cilantro delivery system for me. After that I liked it in Mexican and Indian and just strait big bunches of cilantro in my mouth. Cilantro is yum.

I don't think it tastes like soap but it tastes horrible and smells even worse. I tried to cut up some cilantro once and the smell was so bad that I had to leave the house for a few hours because I was going to puke.

I love it so much that I will often pluck a bit off my plant and chew away on it. Delicious. I feel so bad for those born with that genetic fault that makes you taste soap. My commiserations.

I never had it as a kid, so I don't have perspective, but I hate it nonetheless. (mom also hates it. but luckily I didn't inherit her dislike of oregano)

as for the soap taste, it's not the floral additives that it tastes like. it tastes like the fat+lye (also shampoo.)

I know that tastes change with age, but I always thought it was more for young kids not liking broccoli and stuff. I got over a few other things at about the same time, ginger, lemongrass etc. Some other things I have learned to tolerate, like anise/licorice, and then some I still can't do, like dried mint. Maybe I will learn to love the stuff when I'm 80..?

Cilantro is delicious and amazing. I am strongly pro-cilantro. My best friend thinks it tastes like a corpse, though. Genetics, you are weird.

It's weird, I had a very specific instance like that too! I was about 25 though, and a woman I work with made salsa with tons of cilantro in it and I LOVED it, having previously hated even a tiny bit of it in anything. After that, I like it in everything!

That was my question as well. She had no explanation, so I can only assume she digs up corpses and eats them on a regular basis.

Have any of you tried chopping fresh cilantro very fine and adding it to jarred salsa? It pretty much takes it from meh to wow! It might be an easy way for some of you who are willing to try a bit of cilantro in a small dose masked with other flavors.

Maybe your friend does know what corpses taste like!

HA. Personally I've always thought semen smells like bleach and egg whites, which is gross enough.

Gross but true!

And yeah, totally not vegan. She's not vegan though, so I guess she can eat corpses if she wants! I will stick with cilantro.

What does this mean about those trees that smell like semen when they blossom?

I don't know what the actual type of tree is, but there's a tree that smells like semen when it blooms. I thought it was just a joke with my friends, and then someone up here mentioned the semen trees, so I figure they must be everywhere/more people think they smell like semen than just my high school friends.

I can't remember what kind they are, exactly, but the one's I'm familiar with are these trees that bloom little white flowers and they smell exactly like semen. It's so gross. They lined the street I used to live on, walking outside in spring was like... well. Let's just leave it at that.

AH! It's these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrus_calleryana
