Hope she's on the mend very soon, Nebraskalaska.

I took all my vitamins on an empty stomach, meaning to get breakfast on the way to work, and threw them all back up again. Do not take EFAs without food!

Not a thing so much as a general mood and/or convergence of things. Summer is running out rapidly; my son started his senior year of HS this week, and my own classes start on Tuesday. Seamus Heaney died suddenly, which makes me sad (and his poem "Blackberry Picking" perfectly captures the bittersweet sadness of these last days of relative indolence). Our BFF (an Irish lit scholar, as it happens) just returned from spending the summer in Ireland and we had much-anticipated plans this evening, which is exactly what would have cheered me up. Sadly, my back is randomly freaking the fork out so it looks like I'll be spending the day eating ibuprofen and naproxen, trying to achieve the least uncomfortable position, and endeavoring not to panic because I can not be out of commission just now. (Or ever, really, but you take my point.) And of course there is no food in the house, and my plan had been to do a huge grocery shop this morning, but clearly that isn't in the cards. So my partner has gone to do it all between finishing an article that had to be sent off this morning and driving to Boston for a meeting on campus, which makes me feel horribly guilty. And then there's this ineffable sense of melancholy that probably has something to do with the impending change of seasons or hormones or the position of Mercury or Something Completely Different, but whatever its source I feel fragile and weepy. Maybe I'll just stop resisting and have a good cry.

BLURGH.

ETA - here's the poem.

Late August, given heavy rain and sun
for a full week, the blackberries would ripen.
At first, just one, a glossy purple clot
among others, red, green, hard as a knot.
You ate that first one and its flesh was sweet
like thickened wine: summer's blood was in it
leaving stains upon the tongue and lust for
picking. Then red ones inked up and that hunger
sent us out with milk-cans, pea-tins, jam-pots
where briars scratched and wet grass bleached our boots.
Round hayfields, cornfields and potato-drills
we trekked and picked until the cans were full,
until the tinkling bottom had been covered
with green ones, and on top big dark blobs burned
like a plate of eyes. Our hands were peppered
with thorn pricks, our palms sticky as Bluebeard's.
We hoarded the fresh berries in the byre.
But when the bath was filled we found a fur,
A rat-grey fungus, glutting on our cache.
The juice was stinking too. Once off the bush
the fruit fermented, the sweet flesh would turn sour.
I always felt like crying. It wasn't fair
that all the lovely canfuls smelt of rot.
Each year I hoped they'd keep, knew they would not.

Vijita, I hope you're doing well and get released from the hospital soon. Your symptoms sound really scary and I am so sorry you had to cancel your SF trip. You're in our thoughts!

A girl got raped right off campus last night. I'm glad it got reported so soon, because usually the incident is dated a few weeks before the crime alert goes out. But wow. I hope she's okay. That is not a good start to the school year.

Thanks for the nice thoughts everyone. My Nana is doing worse today, and may be in a coma. We're waiting for a catscan to tell us more and I will possibly be flying to Texas tonight.

dropscone - everyone at work was great and supportive, and I'm fortunate to work for a flexible company so I left to work from home for the rest of the evening.

Vijita, may your hospital stay be brief and successful.

One of my exfosters who was returned when the family moved back to South America has FIP. It is incurable and she has rapidly progressed to the stage where all we can do is supportive care. I'm choosing to do it myself because it's a three day weekend so the vet's office will only be doing support care anyway and mostly no one will be there. Plus she will be happier with cuddles and love at home.

This seems silly compared to what other folks are going through, but I had ingrown toenail surgery today and now the freezing is coming out and it hurts like hell.

Feeling absurdly* affected by the death of Seamus Heaney. Thanks for posting that poem Desdemona.

*absurd because I didn't know the man, only the poems.

You're welcome. And there's nothing absurd about mourning a poet's passing; art helps us appreciate and cope with the world and with being alive in it.

She turned bright yellow today sometime when I was out so I took her back to the vet. Now they think it's hepatic lipidosis which is treatable but it's pretty far gone and her prognosis is poor. The vet told me to pray for her. I ended up admitting her because she has a better chance of living that way. The vet told me to pray for her. He's never said that to me before.

Tofulish, thanks for the kind words.

I am so sorry Nebrasalaska. Our thoughts are with you and your family <3

And sending lots of good thoughts to your cat blondiefk. I can't even imagine a bright yellow cat, it sounds really troubling. I hope she pulls through and feels better soon.

There seem to be a lot of older cats dumped at our shelter, and I always think its so sad that they don't get to die at home surrounded by the love they are used to, but instead end up in a confusing institution for their last days.
