Ok, admittedly I am not very computer savvy, and it's been years since I've had to write resumes and formal letters and whatnot. I think the word processing apps on my computer are defunct.

I need to write couple of letters, to be submitted online in either JPEG or PDF format. Is there a free online program......icloud? or Google Docs? Crikey, when you don't pay much attention to this stuff for a few years it doesn't seem so simple anymore!

Any help much appreciated. I just need to write a few letters, so not a ton of stuff. But it can't just be an email type thing.

thanks!

you can upload to gdocs and download as PDF. I'm sure there are .doc->.pdf converters online too (just googled fast: http://www.freepdfconvert.com/ seems like a good start?)

I usually use OpenOffice to create a document and then convert it with doPDF. But I've been out of the loop for a while too! I've never explored the potential of Google Docs.

google docs is pretty good for this kind of thing. there are a few things it won't do (various comments and save changes, iirc, and the word counts are always off) but for everyday use it's great. you can def save as a pdf. and if your computer goes kaplooey your docs are saved online.
i would say only go for open office if you need one long-term (it is my favorite WP app) because the learning curve may take a bit and formats sometimes are problematic.

In Word, you can "send as" a PDF attachment.

yes (although you might have a limited-capability trial edition on a new computer), and the new word is cloud-based (although you could conceivably buy 2010). OpenOffice is free but you need to download.
You may have a free application on your computer, like notepad, but that won't let you do any formatting, and it also will only let you save as a .txt.

I'll second Open Office and it's free.
