I was walking through the forest yesterday and I was thinking about how I define myself with words. I came up with Vegan being secondary only to Male which I found really interesting because I would of figured it was further down the line; however, I am not a father which would naturally come second and I couldn't find another modifier that meant as much to me. I guess it means my life is rather empty that vegan is so close to being preeminent.

So I am Male, Vegan, and then a bunch of other stuff.

What are you up to your Vegan modifier?

I would say it's 3rd or 4th for me - maybe because it has been part of my life for so long that I sometimes forget that it's so different from everyone else.

Pretty far down. Gender, age, partner, kids, occupation, where I live - I'm not even sure I'd remember to mention it if someone asked me to describe myself.

Gender is that high for you both? That just seems weird to me, I guess. In the same as nationality would, but I'm not even sure why that makes me so uncomfortable.

I guess it should not make me feel uncomfortable, but it does, probably because I understand it in a similar way if someone had their race as a main self description. If you can emotionally understand why that would make me uncomfortable, maybe this, too? All that tells me, really, is, that a lot of stuff in the world makes me uncomfortable...

I think you'd think differently about race if you were a racial minority.

to me it depends the audience, I think. sometimes I don't mention I'm vegan at all (until lunch/dinner time!), but sometimes it features in the first conversation. I think some people just feel more compassionate, so I feel less threatened by telling them.

in a one liner, I think it's 3rd-ish generally: Australian, nerd, vegan

And how do you know my race or if I'm a minority? I'm bisexual, too, but I'd feel really strange putting this as an identifier.

I think this is just me having mental issues where I associate labeling of some sorts with seperation and discrimination. Maybe grouping people into seperated fields which bounderaies have such (often negative) powers in this society just scares me a bit. I'm sorry I brought this up. I just read through the thread and wrote what I thought without filtering, which is a mistake and has happened to me before on here.

Depending on the context I'd say it's probably 5th or 6th.

According to my Twitter & Instagram bio's, first! I write a vegan blog & run a vegan bakery so veganism's a pretty huge part of who I am.

You know what? I didnt.
But it looks like I was right.
I think the problem I have with your post is that you imply that there is something wrong with identifying with your race. Lots of people don't have the priveledge to not care about their race.
I'm sorry if it sounded like I was trying to attack you. I didn't mean to. I just hoped it would make you think. And I didn'tmean to say that people who are in the racial majority necessarily identifies with their race.

For me it's Australian, nerd, vegan, not really Australian.

I'm going to say about 5th or 6th also. Though thinking about how to describe myself scares me a little since I feel I don't know who I am lately!

Yeah, this. It definitely depends on the context. At the HFS where I work, I'm constantly telling people that I'm vegan because they're asking about food/health stuff a lot and almost everyone I work with is vegan, too. I generally hate writing up bios and whatnot, though, because I'm bad at nailing down just exactly who I am and what I'm into.

I think it's 2nd or 3rd for me! usually it's something like: artist, vegan, a bunch of other shiitake.

artist, vegan, cyborg, beep boop boop beep etc.

edit: oh! if we're talking about self-description in the context of casual conversation I don't really mention it until someone offers me food. but in my self-perception it's second.
in casual conversation I just say i 'm a printmaker and that confuses people enough that I can make an escape.

It is almost never in my self-description. I am not particularly shy about telling people that I am. The only place I can think of online that I have it listed is on my Instagram, maybe my twitter, neither of which I really use.

It is in my business description. Because that is where it is a big part of why people go to my business. But as a person, I have other things that I put first. Mother, wife, writer, herbalist, tea maker, blah blah blah.

vegan is pretty high up there for me. I think I'd probably say queer, activist, feminist, and vegan

None of you put "sentient animal" in your hierarchy of identities, so how vegan could you really even be?

That depends on whether you mean how I describe myself to myself, or how I describe myself to other people. It would be pretty high in my self-perception, maybe two or three, but would only come up with others if there's context. In my match.com profile (hey, it was me self-describing, right?) it was in the last paragraph and only mentioned because there were guys on there who specifically railed against veg*ns in their own profiles and I figured it was worth it to at least weed out those d-bags. If I hadn't been aware of their existence I would not have mentioned it. It's a huge part of who I am, but not something I draw attention to until there's a reason.

For me it goes: sentient animal, person, morally arbitrary identity driven by the unexamined tribalism of conventional society, origami enthusiast, breegan (meaning I eat dumpstered honey, not to be confused with briegan).

Does that all even fit in your twitter profile?

My twitter profile says vegan/nerd/tv lover because I tweet about it a lot.
